IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

I got this Ingersoll Rand 5HP 80G compressor from a friend however it has a bad knock and I would like to fix it.
Model #: TS5
5HP
80Gallon
15.8 CFM @ 90PSI

I found the rebuild kit and would like to try to rebuild it myself however not sure if I can do it correctly. It's hard to find a repair shop around me also.

The rebulid kit #:85581486

Should I try this myself? I've rebuilt VW engines and just replaced the topend on my LS1 motor.
I have looked for a rebuild manual for this pump and cannot find one, If I can get the torque and play specs I would try it?

Re: IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

Sure its something you can do. The small compressors are fairly easy to do. You have a compressor there is no pump. Pumps pump liquid not gas.

I'm still trying to find a shop that can repair the compressor however if I can't find one then I might as well try to rebuild it myself.

Thanks for the correction.

Re: IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

I think I'm going to try to get a new one. Talking to a friend, he said it's getting ready to throw a rod. His recommendation was that the cylinders can get out of shape because it's air cooled and that can cause other issues.

Any thoughts on that?

Re: IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

If its been overheated or run low on oil there are a lot of problems you could run into trying to rebuild something that isnt rebuildable due to wear issues. Its probably cheaper to get a replacement.

I'm going to buy a HarborFreight pump for $169 with the 20% off and be done with it. It's not a 2 stage but should work.

Re: IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

Tri5 did you ever open it up and take a look? If it is still something you are thinking about check out marcuse and sons compressors in FT Worth Texas. They don't have a great website, give them a call. They sell aftermarket compressor parts at usually half of what OE parts cost.

I haven't open it up yet but will very soon. I looked at the Marcuse and Son site however I didn't see anything about IR compressor.

Re: IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

The website for Marcuse stinks. They do have the best stock of aftermarket compressor parts around. I always call them. The popular models are usually 1 to 2 days to ship for an overhaul kit. Be sure to tell them you want aftermarket. Sometimes They will resell oe parts if the aftermarket are not available.

Re: IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

Finally got the rebuild kit and will start working on it this week, I need a honing tool to make sure the cylinder walls are round. The kit is complete with instructions and specification, only thing I didn't get is pistions, so hopefully the pistons are still in good shape.

Re: IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

It's not a race engine. I have ran some pretty ugly pistons in compressors. With long skirts on the piston I just Emory cloth them nice and smooth. I have done over 20 recips and not bought a piston. Did your kit come with clearance specs? Did you end up with a genuine ir kit?

It didn't come with clearance specs, I'll need to get that before using a honing tool, this is all base on what the cylinder walls look like and after miking it.
The kit is a genuine IR kit, I actually got a couple bonus pieces, I got one new 2" piston and a air filter which is good, so all I need to really worry about is the larger piston and the cylinder wall. I got everything else for upper and lower end of the pump.

Re: IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

Good luck on getting actual clearances from IR. Were the cylinders scared.

On a side I would highly recommend slowing down the compressor final speed if you can live with a little less cfm. It will run cooler and last much longer if you do. The engineers try to get every cfm they can but they don't expect them to live more than 5 years.

Haven't cracked it open yet, I'll do that this weekend. Don't know I can get that info about clearance but I'll try to ask the vendor I got the kit from.
How do I slow down the speed? 5 Years, really? then it doesn't make any sense to really invest alot of $$$ into a compressor then.

Re: IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

How often is your compressor used? Daily, couple times per week or constantly?
My intentions are to use it as much as possible to get my truck finished then not that much.

Re: IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

5. Year expectation is when a retail store compressor, is asked for daily service. 10 years is great on a recip asked for daily service. I bet it is a t30 not a ss or ts series. I also bet it cycles less than 5 times an hour.

Tri 5 for the use you describing that machine is going to be fine. It would blow up pool floaties and air up the occasional tire for 50 years. Just change the oil every now and then.

Good to know, once this is rebuilt, I'll try to sell my US General (HF) 60 gallon.

Re: IR 5HP air compressor pump knocking.

I finally started tearing the pump down, the top end had a lot of crud on it after removing the head, maybe someone opened it up before. My buddy who is a mechanic watched me do the work and checked everything (pistons, rods, head) and said he does not see anything that would cause the type of knocking I was talking about.
The cylinders look almost new, still have cross hatch, the crank show a slight brown ring where the smaller piston rod connect, the rods looked good. He thinks it could the sheaves that could be the issue because it weren't sitting on the pins once the head was removed. I took some pictures.

He'll take the crank to get it polished and mic the cylinders, then I'll start putting it back together. He also want me to get a new larger piston since everything is going to be new except for the crank and large piston. Is it really necessary if everything looks good?
