Video research update

For those of you who have been involved in the video research , please read on.

First off, let me start by saying sorry it has been so long between updates. Allied Vaughn (AV - the company that has the videos), has been dragging their feet on this process, and terrible at getting back to me by the times they told me they would. Sick of waiting, I called them again today to find out what progress has been made, and heard some bad news.

I mentioned in my previous thread that once AV has conducted their research, they would then burn a time code VHS to send to GM, GM would then have to give approval on the videos and if they should be given to me. At that time, AV mentioned that GM does not release videos with songs and people in them, for copywrite reasons and such, but she (the lady I am dealing with at AV) felt we should get something out of it. Well after talking to AV today, GM approved NONE of the commercials AV had on file and would not release any to me. Fortunately, AV only did one hour of research (and came up with 15 commercials) because they didn't want to charge me for the full three hours only to get turned down by GM and wipe me/us out of $150. I was pissed!

The lady I was talking to then told me she could perform a "search" by running a report and look for any "truck" related "action" videos as she called them. From the way it sounds, these would be like dealership only info-mercials (for lack of a better term) and would show the trucks driving, explaining new features, and such. There will be no charge for this report, and she said she could E-mail me the report sometime tomorrow and I could then decide if I wanted to have them dig those up. Of course, once the tape goes in, we get charged the $50 per hour.

This is where I need input from those who have participated. Do you guys want to pursue this path, or would you like to back out? If you want to keep on going, I will post the info she gives me on the board for you all to see before any decisions are made on my end as far as continuing or stopping this transaction.

Please let me know your thoughts on this. I want to be fair, and I don't want you guys to feel ripped off.

Jeff, something is better than nothing. I'd love to see period information on these trucks.

Thanks a lot GM I'd send them a letter demanding an explanation but i know it'll probably get tossed in the "satisfied customer feedback" pile of two or three letters and get "forwarded" to the local paper recyclers before anyone actually opens it.

Anyway, like everyone else i say go for it.

GM has to pay royalties for use of a song or use of a person each time that is played.
That is why they do not release those. It's all about money.

But what doesn't makse sense is the fact that they gave me GM photographs with people in them...why are they different?

G, I was taking donations a month or so ago for this project. Don't send any money right now, but wait and see what we get. If we do get something, you can then make your donation...and the extra money will go to Josh and the site. As it sits right now, there is just enough money for the research and DVD burning...I hope to break even.

I am just guessing on this.......
Maybe the agreement with the person(s) in those photos was for unlimited use.
If the pictures have GM employees in them there is probably something in the GM employee hand book about using their picture if they please.
With photos of regular people they can usually get them to sign something stating unlimited use, etc. With models it depends on how that model works, some get a lump some, some get royalties.
With music or famous people it is almost always an up front lump some with royalties per use.
Everyone wants to get paid.

OK folks, got an E-mail today from AV with the .xls spreadsheet she promised. It is a pretty big spreadsheet with lots of items on it I have no clue about what the stuff really is. Take a few minutes (well, maybe more), and let me know what you think, and better yet, what ones really interest you. I personally would like to get the Dateline footage with the side impact explosion BS.

Anyhow, here is the link.

Can you convert the datasheet into another format? I can't open XLS files. ASCII text, RTF or Word document works for me.

Rock, I can't convert it to any of those formats without hosing up the .xls file they sent me. Microsoft Excel is a standard program I thought, your PC should have it.

Just to let everyone know where this stands. I went thru the spreadsheet and selected the following items I thought would be neat to see. Here are the line numbers...

2, 3, 4, 5, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 34, 84, 108, 211, 213, 214, 217, 227, 261, 349, 433, 486, 507, and 517

Remember, this was a spreadsheet she gave me based on a search using the word TRUCK. Because this spreadsheet contained very little 73-87 stuff IMO, I had her perform another search using Beau, Indy, Gentleman, and Cheyenne. I should get this spreadsheet in a day or two I assume, and hopefully it will contain some more useful information on it. Perhaps we can pick the best of the two and go from there. Doing these searches does not cost any money, so I am trying my best to find the correct key words in their database for what we all want. Perhaps the next search we can use Silverado and possibly 1973, 1974, etc.. I am still a little confused on when I actually begin to get charged and what will ond won't be approved by GM for release, so I asked her to tell me before anything gets charged to my credit card. We already wasted (or got screwed out of) $50 on the 13 commercials they found and GM declined approval on, so I am trying to be as careful and frugal as I can.

Anyhow, this is where we are at now. Let me know what you think of the above choices so far, and let me hear any other suggestions you may have.

Well as I was reading your last post I thought the same thing, search for "Silverado." Maybe even C-10, K-10, etc.

If you would, let us know when you want us to make a donation, 'cause I don't want to miss out on this.

Thanks for taking the time to look into this.

8t5, search through Jeff's previous post. He has already posted his paypal and such...

as far as using Silverado as a seach, unless you put a year restriction on it (i dont know how this company does it searches) you may end up with alot of newer stuff.

Jon, I hear you on that, but they are limited to one word searches. That is OK, it is better to have too much as opposed to too little.

Jeff, as far as i know Micro$oft does not ship Excel with any of their operating systems as standard issue. I don't have (or want, for that matter) any other MS software besides WinXP and Word.

Whatever you manage to squeeze out of the deal is fine by me, as long as we get something for our money.
