Just got Diagnosis from Mechanic...suggestions??? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well you guys probably know my 72' K-10 either dropped the tranny or rear end and I just got the call....REAR END exploded so to speak. I have little to no experience with this so I'm looking for advise??? Did y truck have a posi in it...I think it did?? Do I get a new 3.07 eaton posi for it??? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! Oh...how much does a problem like this cost???

I had my 10 bolt on my '90 Jimmy rebuilt with new everything. Cost me $1100!! Basically decided I'm a dumbass and should have just grabbed one out of the junkyard. Will never do that again! Could have bought a Dana 60 front diff for that!

Anyway, watch out. You could drop a grand on rebuilding it and you still wouldn't be able to get more that $200 for it if you tried to sell it. Definitely get a solid estimate before the work is done. My parts were pricey as I did ring and pinion, carrier, spider gears, bearings, etc... Ads up real quick. I'm not saying I got ripped off, I'm just saying I should have had more sense than to spend that much money on a 1/2 ton rear diff.

Hmmmm....maybe it's time for you to upgrade to 1 ton stuff! 8 lug bullet proof. 4.10s with 35s would be sweet!

You can also go with a 73 & up 12 bolt rear end. You would have to relocate the spring perches & shock mounts for it to bolt up, but you also get larger brake drums for beter stopping. ( Make sure you get the correct gears to match the front )

So how do I determine what the ratio is that is busted and whether it is a posi unti or not? Did the 72' K-10 come with 3.07 posi unit?

I know they came with 3:07's, if it was originaly a posi it should be on the option sheet in the glove box. Other wise ( If something is broken inside ) you'll have to look at the carrier to see if it's a posi. There would be spring packs or clutch plates in the carrier if it's a posi. You can determine the ratio by the numbers on the ring gear. Example ( 41 DIV By 11 = 3.73 ) Not sure what the numbers are for 3:07s. Also there maybe a tag on the front diff under one of the cover bolts, on this tag it will give the gear ratio.

I spent 1100 on my rebuild for the 67. New gears rebuild the posi bearings seals. If you are keeping the truck it would be worth having it rebuilt. The eatons are a great posi. They are also rebuildable.

I guess seeing how I have to rebuild this rear end I can make it 3.07 or 3.73....what should I do there??? I'm really in the dark in this area...never done this crap or been down this road before.

Remember that the ratio in your rear diff has to match the ratio in the front, if not, when you put it in 4x4, the front will be trying to go faster than the rear. I say rebuild her with your current ratio, and a posi.

Do you "need" a posi.....If you never noticed if you had one or not, chances are you will never "need" one.

Should you spend the extra $ on a posi......only if your planing a lot more power or some more then casual off roading.

That dosen't sound right, 44/11 = 4. Recheck the numbers on the tag or the ring gear. You have to have the same gears front and rear. ( 3:73's are 41/11.) The higher # is the number of teeth on the ring gear and the lower number it the number of teeth on the pinion gear. You could also mark a tooth on the ring gear, slowly turn it and count the teeth. But there should be numbers on the ring gear that indicate the # of teeth.

Mechanic shop just said $1600.00 for them to rebuild it with an Eaton posi and new gears & bearings....Are they ripping me off??? The above ebay auction for the Eaton posi with ring and pinion, bearings, & everything needed is roughly $600 to my door.....so $1000 for the labor??? Is that right??? Your thoughts are appreciated tons...don't want to get taken on something I don't know much about. Thanks in advance!!

That sounds high to me, but I would do the job myself and just pay for the parts. For that kind of money they should be replacing just about everything. Posi carrier, ring & pinion gears, carrier bearings, pinion bearings, axel bearings, axel seals, cover gasket, shim kit and lube. But the most important part is they set up the gear depth & back lash correctly or it will all be junk in a short time. ( New crush sleeve also )

bring it up here to SD and I'll rebuild it for ya! I just rebuilt my mom and dad's 2000 chevy suburban's rear end, ended up costing around 400 for used parts, and new pinion bearings. not too hard of a job, ya just have to take your time. pay me the 1200 and I'll do it for ya.

I just had mine done. New Eaton carrier, bearings, OEM ring and pinion - it cost around $1200. I probably could have done it myself, but there are some critical measurements - bearing preload, and pinion depth that I didn't have tools for, and didn't have the time to 'trial and error' it.

OK...with all you guys help I have got a deal going to completely rebuild my rear end for $900 bucks!!! I bought the complete 12 bolt Eaton Posi kit over the phone with the upgraded blue box Motive ring and pinion gear-set all the bearings , seals , shims....for $600 bucks, delivered to my door.

I am super happy...you guys just helped me save $700 bucks!!! Does this board rock or what!!!
