Stull tube grill question

Does anyone have a Stull tube grill on their truck? I have one that I want to install on my '72. The instructions say to trim the headlight bezels about 1/4-inch. Is this really necessary? If so, then why didn't they just make the brackets a little shorter? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I have a Stull billet grille in mine. Do you mean billet or old-school tube grille?
