bare block storage

I have a 73' 454 sitting on an engine stand and there's some rust forming on the cylinder walls. Should I be concerned? I won't be touching this block for atleast another year while I finish school and save for a house. Is there a proper way to store a block for long term.

Re: bare block storage

no need for concern let it rust and by the time you get out of school you'll get a good job and be able to scrap it and buy new

Re: bare block storage

I always spray bare blocks down with wd-40 and stick them under my work bench. Make sure you get all machined surfaces covered.

Re: bare block storage

I spray them with LPS and put them in a large heavy duty trash bag. I've had blocks sit for 5 years with no rust.

Re: bare block storage

I second the WD-40. I sprayed it on all the machined surfaces of my 350 and then put an engine bag from summit on it. The block had just barely started to rust before I put the WD-40 on it but I haven't noticed any new rust since then and it's been sitting for more than a year and I rubbed the rusty spots with a clean rag after I'd sprayed the block and it all came off. I've heard of people "pickling" their blocks by just leaving them out in the backyard unprotected. Supposedly a thin coat of rust actually protects the metal (but from what) but personally I'd rather just prevent the rust in the first place.

Re: bare block storage

use a light coat of clean axle grease on all machined surfaces to be safe. double wrap it in trash bags and keep it off the floor best you can. be good for mant years.

Re: bare block storage

I have also used good clean grease to coat the inside of the cylinders and all machined surfaces. I then just put mine on a shelf with a old towel covering it. Stayed rust free for years.

Re: bare block storage

Thanks for the info guys. I'll spray it with WD-40 and wrap it up.

Re: bare block storage

Why didn't I think of using garbage bags instead of paying 5 bucks for an engine bag? Oh well, live and learn.

That's why we come here. something that is obvious to one person, gets overlooked by another (that would be me normally )
