Brake light switch

Hi; I have a '72. The P/O had attached a spring to the brake pedal arm using a cable tie. The other end of the spring was then screwed to the dash underside. This hookup kept the brake pedal high enough to allow the brake lights to shut off when the pedal was released. All this was done because the brake switch jam nuts had loosened. Well I have been trying for 2 days to get some kind of wrench or crow foot up in here to tighten that jam nut. No success! Must that entire pedal assy be removed to secure that nut? Or is there a trick someone else has discovered?

Re: Brake light switch

you sure the spring wasn't rigged to replace the spring that was there originally?

Re: Brake light switch

Most of those brake switches are plastic that have very small threads in the plastic. If you really tighten down on the lock nut it strips it out. The switch is easly replaced. Any Auto store will have them. Buy a new one and just snug it up good.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Brake light switch

I removed the guage assy. The original spring is still there and working normally. I think the possibility that the threads are worn is more likely the explanation. I finally did get it tightened. If it "loosens" up again, I'll buy a replacement and apply silicone gasket sealer, or lock-tite to the new threads.
Thanks.................

Re: Brake light switch

Those are a PIA to get a wrench in there, I like the idea of removing the gauge cluster, might be faster in the long run. I'll have to remember that next time, thanks for the tip.
