Simply get one off a 67-72 3/4 or 1 ton....1 1/2 turns lock to lock...and works great....almost to easy...

is the 3/4 ton gear have the same 3/4" splined shaft? Are the pump lines the same as a1/2 ton? I like the way you guys think.

Re: Fast steering box?

Rockauto shows the 83 with a 3/4" shaft with metric o-ring fittings. The 67-72 3/4 ton has IFF fittings but is 13/16" on the shaft spline unlike my 67. hmmm

Re: Fast steering box?

neither my one ton nor my 3/4 ton had quick ratio steering, and my 1/2 ton had the same ratio.
I have always been told that they were all one and the same. I don't think I've ever driven a truck that had more than 1 1/2 turns lock to lock onless it had manual steering.
The later trucks had variable rate steering... but it wasn't a quick ratio box.
Our truck boxes mount on the outside of the frame, while car boxes mount inside the frame... to my knowledge, there is no junk yard quick ratio swap for us.
The aftermarket on the otherhend... I'm sure they can hook you up, or even a local steering gear box place.... when my dad took the old Town Car to steer and gear here in columbus, he told them it steered too slow, so they hooked him up. Used the original box, new guts, very responsive now.

Re: Fast steering box?

I have an ECE quick ratio box on my C10. It took a full turn out lock to lock. Not cheap, but it works like it should.

Re: Fast steering box?

IIR the 69-72 PS boxes are about 4 1/4 turns lock to lock. The 73+ PS boxes are about 3 1/4 turns lock to lock. I recall asking a board member with an ECE "quick box" about lock to lock and being told 3+a little. The rag joint does change but that can't be to hard to buy the correct one.

I wonder about swapping internals from a Camaro/TransamFirebird box to get around a 2 1/2 lock to lock. Any body done this?

Re: Fast steering box?

I have a variable ratio box in mine... it's about 3 1/4 lock to lock. Custom built by Tregg Wright at Durex 800-862-6658. Total bolt in.. rag joint and all. Again... not cheap. He was a little hesitant about my mounting it in a 4x4 but the variable ratio is not too sensitive at all IMO. Works great.

Re: Fast steering box?

Go back and read Bob Moore's post...there is the simple answer. Manual box =5.5 turns, 68-72 = 4.5 turns and the 73-? are 3.5. We call that a quick ratio and the used boxes are cheap. Just find a tight one.
I just put one in the 67 GMC that I was posting pics and updates on the pic board. Nice improvement with a big stock steering wheel.

I have one on my 67 from a 71 C20 it's feeels like 10 turn lock to lock. I am going to take the one off my 84 and put it on my 67 it is a really tight and takes alot less turns to get where I want to go.

Won't you have to use metric lines for the 84 box?

Re: Fast steering box?

I have the quick ratio box on mine since it is a 3/4 ton and it was obvious the cornering differece it had then. When I put all of this suspension and drivtrain on a shortbed frame it damn near got away from me. I can get the tires smoking on this and cut the wheel and the driver's front tire will spin on it's own axis. THAT'S AWESOME!

Re: Fast steering box?

We are having quick ratio steering gears remanufactured (by Read Head Steering Gears) with all new oversized bearings for added strength. They also custom fit each worm and piston assembly with special ordered precise oversized ball bearings. Again for longer life. We have them make our gears special order for our trucks. This way they have the same input shaft as our trucks do and the same power steering hose fittings also. The only difference is that they are 3 1/2 turns lock to lock instead of the 4 1/2 that our trucks both the 1/2 tons and 3/4 tons have. Our gears also come with a 12 month unlimited milage guarantee!! Lets see a junk yard give you that. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

The size of the wheel shouldnt make a difff on "lock to lock", but the smaller wheels are less distance to turn. I run an 84 burb (metric box) on my longhorn, & count 3 1/4 turns lock to lock...... L

Hmmmm... My 71 Copper 3/4 ton Copper Truck is 4 1/2 same as my Orange 3/4 ton Cheyenne Super. The GM master parts catolog only gives one part number for the series 10 thru 30 steering gears also. Wonder what the deal is on that.. Something else to ponder...lol WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com
