58-59 front wheel differences
seen a 58-59 gmc (4 eyed version) that was parked for some time. there was no box but the cab and front end was intact and complete. it was a regular sized front end like a 1/2 ton (not wide fendered version) but had large diameter hole in the middle of the wheel on the front. anybody seen that before? I have a 3/4 ton but the wheels are just regular 8 bolt wheels. these looked like a current one ton dually would have but it only had single wheels out back. did they make single wheel one ton trucks in 57?

Re: 58-59 front wheel differences
according to the fam: all 1 ton trucks had single wheels like your 3/4 ton
dual wheels didn't come into use until 4000 series though the railroad typically used bud style wheels on pickups to get traction on highrailer vehicles

Re: 58-59 front wheel differences
thanks ogre, must be a 1 ton then. good shape body wise (from the road). maybe ill see if it's for sale and try sneaking it home when the wife is shoe shopping or something, haha.
just out of curiousity, do you know if the 4 eyed trucks are wider between the front fender wheel openings than the earlier trucks? it seems like the front fenders flare out some in comparison. maybe it is just a visual thing. the fenders have that extra bump out in front of the wheels that the others don't. probably the same actual width though from a birds eye view, eh? |

Re: 58-59 front wheel differences
58/59 `1 tons could be had with either single or dual rear wheels as any other year of 1 ton could.

Re: 58-59 front wheel differences
fender to fender is the same as the lesser 2 eyed trucks
same doors and bumper, the hood is narrower to make up for the additional fender width

Re: 58-59 front wheel differences
GM did some odd things with wheels in that series trucks. 3600 and 3800 could have had single rear wheels or dual rear wheels. 3600 dually was rare but I have seen them. 3800 could have had single rear wheel on a dual rear wheel axle and the spoke type wheels. I run into this with the brake kits we make.
Civil defense, forest service and other rough service trucks could have had single rear wheel on a dually axle and the big 5 lug or 8 lug wheel |
