Re: Backup lights, beepers, camera, etc

Not a fan of the beepers although I've seen a few times at car shows when they would have been pretty handy.

As far as backup lights, I have a pair of inexpensive driving lights (I think they came from Harbor Freight) that I will tuck up under the bed of the truck so they shoot light out the back but don't show up too much from the back. I got them for a little car my wife had that she cracked the head on before they got put on and they got stuck in the storage shed. I'm not sure what I'll use for a switch running the floor shift but the 3 speed may give way to a five speed during the build to end up with 3.7 gears and overdrive and the five speed will have a built in back up light switch.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: Backup lights, beepers, camera, etc

All I did was mount a pair of 12v 1/2" LED's in my roll pan, very small and has an alum housing that blends into my silver paint fairly well. Also much brighter than I expected. I found them on ebay for $3 each.

I'm not a huge fan of beepers or cameras either but it would definately limit the chance of backing into (or over) someone or something.

Re: Backup lights, beepers, camera, etc

I have read somewhere about converting 4" farm implement light to VERY good back up lights using aircraft lamps. Considering it for flashing the idiots that come up behind with the brights on.... Also remember that if lighting behind you most LED's are designed to be seen straight on and not project a lot of light unless you get very expensive ones.

Re: Backup lights, beepers, camera, etc

I'm using a backup camera. I got one free with the double Din Cd player that I bought so I figured what the heck. The only problem was I didn't want it sticking out like a wort.

It is flush with the roll pan. Most people dont even notice it.

I do like how well it works.

My working plan is to put four of these live well LED lights in my roll pan.
There’re about the size of today’s backup sensors.

Re: Backup lights, beepers, camera, etc

hirmkin needs to post a link or part number for those backup lights.
i don't have any but would like some and have the switch and wire run.

like youngrodder stated, backup camera will be built into the head unit.
i don't have a camera, but the av system is wired and turns on the screen when i shift into reverse.
don't need it on a short bed, big window cab.

the only buzzer i have is a headlight chime. i find backup buzzers a pia

Re: Backup lights, beepers, camera, etc

Thanks for posting those small lights folks. I never thought about that but the ones Hotrod1 posted to the link to look affordable and easy to place discretely on the back of the truck so they aren't too noticeable when they aren't on.

I keep seeing the little backup camera and screen things at O'Reilly's when I go in for parts for around 50.00 but wonder if a guy could see good enough on that small screen. One of those might work on my 71 so I can hook up the boat trailer a bit easier by myself. The way I am building my 48 this time i might need one in it to back up too but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Thanks for the pics. Those are very little and very bright. I like the fact that they are pointed slightly down.

Re: Backup lights, beepers, camera, etc

Definately like the back up lights HiRMKin posted which is close to what I was looking for originaly I wanted to paint the outer bezle body color but in the end I settled on the ones I posted, the small back up camera is very cool especialy since it displays on the stereo and doesnt stick out like a sore thumb.

FYI: When I did my search I looked for "12v motorcycle fog lights/ back up lights"

Re: Backup lights, beepers, camera, etc

Is the photo lit completely by the lights (room lights off and dark)? If so they put out a lot of light. If not I would like to see a photo of how much they light behind the truck.

The pic was with all the shop lights on (10x 2 tube 4' florecents) unfortunately I only had my cell phone (10mp) I tried with 1/2 the lights off but it ended up too bright for a decent image and the shot looked like an oncoming train . They are pretty darn bright though, from the ad they can be used for motocycle fog lights on a croch rocket.

Re: Backup lights, beepers, camera, etc

I was thinking more of a shot from the bed showing how far behind the truck was lit up.
