Transmission oil coolers

what coolers would you recomend im looking at one from summit and was wondering what you guys had luck with?

i've got a b&m super cooler in my truck. have the 25,000lb one. loaded i'm around 14 thou. lbs. where i live we have 4 15-20 mile long 20% grade or better hills, real tranny killers. trans usally runs at 170-180, never been over 190

They got thermostats in 'em? Just like oil coolers, they're the only good ones. If no thermostat, then bad things.

Good point:

I've been recommending these and installing them for years after every rebuild. Now being on the OEM side of the business, I still recommend them. GM utilizes the same basic design on their optional external coolers and has for quite sometime.

I installed the biggest stacked plate cooler I could find, and fabbed up a thermostatically controlled fan. It works well. The stacked plate design is supposed to be much more efficient than a tube and fin.

I installed the biggest cooler I could fit. 25,000 GVW. It takes up about 1/2 the radiator on one side. In Texas, yes we need it. However, note that when the weather cools you need to drive really slow for a few miles. I notice the huge cooler in cool weather. My transmission has a shift kit and other mods. It shifts good and hard when the weather is HOT. When it's cold, the shifts are even harder and noticibly different. After a few miles, it shifts normally. In cooler states, it may be worth an effort to bypass it during the winter unless you are towing.

You guy's arent bypassing the radiator mounted cooler are you???
I like the coolers that beamn7 is running.
That chart is VERY misleading, 195* DOES NOT hurt a transmission or the ATF or make it quit in 50,000 miles....Then if you run it 20* cooler the trans will last twice as long....More BS.

180*-195* is optimal temp, Im not afraid of 220* while towing real heavy, At 230*....Pull over & cool the trans down.

Run good full synthetic ATF like Allison TranSynd or any TES-295 ATF.

Thanks for all the knowledge I wasn't sure on what to go with, I'll keep looking for a cooler that fits my needs. I put the rebuilt trans in tonight and she's shifting and running great!
