You mean the part that holds the AC ball on? I have wondered myself what dictates the color.I have a 71 that is interior color and a 72 that is body color.

Mine match the interior in the area where the dash meets the window. Those are the only air vents I have. There are some vents on the kick panel - black.

Ha! I'll bet you he doesn't... I've seen both too. Prefer body color. But in some green trucks, they never seem to match ANYthing other than hopefully at least one of the ten shades of green trim in these things - but neither black or body color (that's my case anyway).

Whenever I get around to gettin around to it, I will be painting mine body color.

But, to answer your question, my GUESS is that it was plant-specific, similar to the reason some gb doors are black on non-black trucks. (I'm not saying the same plant that did the black gb door is the same plant that did black ac vent retainers, just using that as an example). But I truly don't know that that is the case, just guessin. Another theory I had was that the black ones were replacements - and they just came in black. But I've seen so many black ones that I assume that is not the case. Pretty sure I've seen some originals with black ones. Can you tell if your black ones are originals? Probably almost impossible, know the interior was pretty crusty. When I was looking at your truck, I was planning to paint them ochre. In fact, at one point I bought a set of used ochre vents (that's how close I came to buying that little truck...) But, the vents are pretty crappy (mine) - better approach would be to paint the ones you have if you prefer body color. And that's what I'd do unless you could confirm that they were originally black. Probably impossible though. What are your plans? Leave em black or paint em ochre?

Re: why some air vents blk others color?

My 69 with maroon exterior, maroon paint inside the cab, and black bucket seats, door panels, steering column, and dash pad has black vent housings. I am 100% positive they are all original.

I always thought GM may have just made evolutionary changes from year to year.

Re: why some air vents blk others color?

I've seen them go all over the place with body or interior/dash pad. I wonder if it's match the dash pad on Cheyenne Super/CST and maybe Cheyenne? Let's keep seeing who has what.
'72 Cheyenne Super...Parchment w/tilt/Black dash pad/Black outlets
'72 Sierra................Blue no/tilt/Blue dash pad/Blue outlets
'72 Custom Deluxe.....Parchment w/tilt/Black dash pad/Blue outlets

Re: why some air vents blk others color?

I've seen highlanders with both, cheyenne supers with both, 67-68's with both, GMC's with both.

I bet it was either a plant thing or more likely, if they were painting a red truck and they did not have any red outlets available then they just used the old black standbys.

My Ochre 72, custom deluxe, parchment interior, black vents. 71 green cheyenne, green interior, green vents. I have never figured this mystery out. I have seen all trim styles painted all different ways.

Thanks. I just finished it a couple months ago. I only had 4 pieces of vinyl replaced on the seat bolsters. Otherwise, the seats are totally original. I debated keeping the original carpet. My before picture doesn't show much change.

If we think this may be a plant to plant difference we should also state where ours are made. My 69 was made in Fremont, California, about the 2nd week of Dec. 1968.

Re: why some air vents blk others color?

so, here's a question - I've NEVER seen any medium olive ones. Anyone seen any? Mine are like the med olive pic above - with dark olive vents. (Jason, I wasn't sure - but in your post # 12 - those vents ARE darker, right? The more I stare, the less I am convinced I think I'm seeing dark vs. med olive on the vents). If they are med olive, then they are the proof of existence I've been seeking!

I would like to paint mine med olive when I redo my interior (solid med olive truck), but if there NEVER were any, I might think twice.

Btw, I LOVE the two highlanders you posted. Wow. I mean WOW! Would love to have a fine example like either of those.

It's difficult to tell but i think you are right, they are dark like the dash pad, wheel and door pannels. I have a box full and I swear I've seen some light ones though.
