frost plug behind timing cover
Just wanted to know how inportant the 3 little plugs are that sit in the block behind the timing chain cover. Do they keep coolant out of the oil in the timing chain??

i just found out they are the oil gallery plugs hehehe oh man I'm in for a looooong night. I dropped the pan to re seal it and found one of the plugs sitting in the bottom of the timing chain cover,which would explain the slight knocking in the engine. Anyone know what size they are in an 82, 350 block?

I'd drill and tap them for a 1/4" pipe plug, but since your motor is together... I would just measure the one you got, get a new one the same size. When you put it in be sure to stake them in there with a punch. You might even put some sticky goo of some sort on 'em so as they don't walk off again.

We always replace the drive in plugs with 1/4 NPT screw in plugs. The holes are the right size for the tap threads. We have always down ours as part of the rebuild prior to hot tanking so I have not done one on a running engine.
However, I believe that with a little care metal shavings can be kept out of the engine. Threaded plugs won't blow out like the drive in ones so it might be worth installing the pipe plugs. If you want to go back with drive in plugs, I will mail you three for a buck, (US). Jim |

I also run pipe plugs......being that the eng is assembled, i would put the cup plugs back in , & stake them in 4 places to aviod any unneeded shavings in the eng. best of luck,crazyL

ok guys, now that it's all apart, and I need to align the timing chain dimples again, how do I do that?? I have the lower gear dimple facing up but the upper gear that attaches to the cam shaft isn't lined up. How do I get them to line up?

Just turn the cam sprocket so that the dot on the cam sprocket is at the bottom right next to the crank gear dot. Shouldnt be too bad to turn if its only a few teeth off.

well i got it all lined up and the front of the engine is ready to re-assemble. Just gotta wait till i can cen the 25 cent plug tomorrow, then I gotta haul as stomorrow night to get it all back together,
