Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Ok, .. kinda what I would rather do anyway

How about 4 wheel disc. Should I cough up the extra and just do it now? I have to change axles, take the whole rear end apart etc. to drop it .. I'm thinking I just spring for the extra $ now and just go ahead.. I can't do Wilwoods or anything, just maybe the McGaughys kit, something like that.

The way I have it figured up, I could have it dropped and wheels / tires around the first of May. I'm having to save here and there to keep the wife happy.

My wife is from Recife Brazil, born and raised but her parents are Taiwanese. (yes, she's smokin .. ) Her sister is still in Rio, .. so she wants to go see her in the next couple months. Yeah, so I have to budget for that too. Brazil is cool, no doubt .. but it will slow down the truck some.

Looking good! I personally would do as much as possible when the box is off. At least as much as the budget allows. I hate laying on the ground and access is sooo much easier with the box out of the way.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

i agree with that do as much as possible while the bed is off, and dont put nice new parts on an old ugly frame, look at how the did the the Angelo service truck just pulled the motor/ front clip, gave it all a great cleaning (looks like they wire wheeled it ) and painting and slap it all back together , and it looks killer !

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

I would leave the drum brakes on the rear until you have more budgeted money.
You can always do disc brakes later.
Install new axles and seals now.

Those backing plates can be cut off later, to avoid disassembly of the rearend again.
Rear disc brakes will cut into your "cool wheel" money. Ha.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

I wish I could do the billets that Stiney had, .. but I just can't on a daily driver and the truck will be sitting outside too. I will probably do the gray Coys just so they're easier to take care of and that's one of my favorite wheels ever.

20" Salt flats would be cool too.. not sure just yet. Still open for a used set. I'm hoping someone will want to freshen theirs up and sell a good setup soon.

There's a reason IMO a lot of people have the Coys and TTIIs They just look cool on old trucks. I'd put them on my lawnmower if I could.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

With a limited budget, I would start off by dropping it!

Purchase a 5 lug disk brake conversion kit with 2" (or 2.5") drop spindles and 2" lowering springs. For now, change over to 5 lug rear axles, and drop the rear as much as possible without a c-notch (5" or 6"?). Maybe when you are ready to remove the bed, we can detail the frame and add rear disks? With this truck being a daily driver, you really don't want it scraping across speed bumps and curbs.

You could even run the 5 lug Rallys from your Big Block truck until you get your 20's if cash was a little low. This would eliminate those "grandpa" whitewalls and get the truck out of the nose bleed section.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Truck is looking good. I agree...skip the rear discs. And...while I like those Racelines...they don't seem to "fit" the look of the truck (light patina nice original) I think the coys, tt2's or similar would fit the truck better....just MHO though

Still hoping to swing by and see both your trucks sometime either on my way down or back again this time. last time I came back late at night with my sister in law and her daughter in the van so that was a no-go

Pm me your dad's address and I'll try to figure out how to work it into my schedule and see if we can meet up there sometime.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Still undecided on the wheels, saving a little money up and I'll get them soon. It wouldn't make sense really to put billets on a driver that will have to sit outside.. I'll probably stay with a cast wheel of some sort.

Not sure what I'll get yet ..

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

I actually called the paint store this morning to price my grille / top paint for it. I haven't forgotten

.. but I did kinda borrow the fuel return spring off of it for my GMC the other day. I honestly felt bad for doing it.

Oh, no .. I haven't forgotten about it. Just trying to get the GMC in 'driver' condition then it's back to the 68. The funds are coming from a difference source on this truck than the BB truck too so that will help.

Momma keeps me pretty busy around the house too. She asked me this morning.. "When are you going to start the ceramic tile project in the kitchen?"
