73 Steering Box??

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes. 1975 C10 2 wheel drive. The steering box has got alot of slop in my truck and i dont feel very safe driving it around here in this crazy So Cal traffic. Is there any other options besides a stock replacement box? I know that people swap out Chevelle boxes for Jeep Grand Cherokee for a closer ratio. Anything like that for the Chevy trucks? Thanks.

I know that you can use 73-87 Chevy truck steering gear box, make sure you get the same year pump too. Also I seen where a guy used a corvette power steering box and had to have special made hoses done. They did have a quick ratio, I used a 1973 Chevy truck gear box and pump. I had the quick ratio 3 1/2 turn gear box. I'm not 100% positive, but I think standard is 4 1/2 turns end to end. I'm sure you'll get a better answer from someone else, but that should gets you started.

Honestly i would buy a new one,If you get a used one it could be worse then what you have now.

I do plan on buying a new one. Just wondering if i have options? I bought a rebuilt Jeep GC box for my 71 Chevelle. Direct bolt on. Only mods are hoses and rag joint.

Many rebuilder's can give you a quick ratio, and better steering feel.

AGR makes good boxes, and I got mine from Summit.

Car Craft magazine had a tech article a few months back on different ps pumps, and how much HP they use.

Your stock steering box can be fixed ($35 kit) or a remanufactured purchased.

Make sure the rest of the steering system is in good condition first.

I checked Borgeson and they do not have a conversion box for the Chevy truck.

Some like http://www.redheadsteeringgears.com/ and http://lee-powersteering.com/ will make you a box with any ratio you want.

Looks like any way i go its going to cost me some serious money. Unless i go stock. The rebuilt Jeep box i got for my Chevelle was only $120.

I'm trying to replace the wide ratio (4 turns lock to lock) gear box in my '77 too.

Does anybody know if these gear boxes will work??? They were used in about the same time period.

That article is about adjusting the sector shaft.

I've rebuilt dozens of these boxes and I do not recommend what the article suggest.

Proper adjustment of the sector needs to be done after the worm gear adjustment. That can't be done properly without box disassembly.

The Saginaw boxes are not hard to work on but require a few (somewhat) special tools.

If I recall correctly, the Saginaw P/S boxes are all the same externally.
There are earlier versions where" I think" there were 3 bolt mounts.
Otherwise I think that they are all made with the 4 bolt patterns.
Lock to Lock, this is a term used to determine the amount of clock turns when you steer all the way from the left to the right.
Some lock to lock ratios are faster.
Above it was mentioned that 3-1/2 & 4-1/2 lock to lock boxes were made.
These are the most common.
I've seen faster ratio boxes, but they can oversteer too fast, unless that is your desired outcome.
2-1/4 is the fastest ratio I've owned.
These were not an option install on GM trucks.
I've seen some just around 3, lock to lock but you would have to search yards, vehicles, & swap meets for every ratio made.

I have a 3-1/2 ratio in my 75 SWB C/10.
Its fast enough.
Mine will be a Daily driver.
I've even considered going to the 4-1/2 just for a slower turn speed rate.
