Max AD Rearend Width

Would a 65in wms to wms rearend with 15x8 wheels with a stock offset be too wide for a 52 gmc? I know from reading that around a 60in may require tubs or spacers. So, I was thinking the extra 2.5in per side may be ok.

I am not able to just put it under there right now and see for myself, so I am trying to pick the collective brain of this forum lol.

If it is too wide, does anyone know of a narrower 5on5 rearend that may work?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Most 5 on 5s were truck so they were pretty wide. The station wagons were 5 on 5s, too but I think at least 63".

Re: Max AD Rearend Width

65" would be ok with stock wheels/tires, but not with wider ones, especially if you are lowered. 71-87 truck 5 lug rears are 63-1/2" over the drums, so you might want to look at one of those. Also, most GM full size cars except Chevy were 5 on 5" through the 70s and 71-76 full size Chevys were 5 on 5" too. Lastly, some 90s Impalas/Caprices were 5 on 5" and should be ok for width, except the wagons.

Re: Max AD Rearend Width

The 50s Olds was 5 on 5 and lots of drag racers like that one for strength. Not sure of the year but there is an option to research.

Why are you going 5 on 5? Most 5 lug conversions for the front are 5 on 4 3/4" or are you using a later truck front end? Another one with width issues...

Re: Max AD Rearend Width

The box width is 50", the fenders have about 11" of usable clearance on each side. You will want to keep the side wall of the tire at least 1" away from the bed sides and at least 1" from the inside lip of the fenders.

Without knowing your rim backspacing and what size tire you will be using we can only guess.

Using these dimensions you can figure out whether it will fit or not.

65" is wider than I would put under an AD truck. The 2nd gen F-body axles are 60" and work well with rims with a 3.75" back spacing. 4" BS can also be used if the tire size is not too wide.

Re: Max AD Rearend Width

A 3/8, 1/4 or 1/2" spacer between the wheel and brake durm is much easier to manage to get the right clearence between the bed side and fender, so maybe a narrower axle is better, I like a 255 tire which fills up the fender opening and clears the fender and bed.

I think this might depend on the rotor size. Generally, 11" rotor conversions are 4-3/4" because they use rotors from a Camaro or Chevelle. Most 12" rotors have a 5" pattern because they came off of trucks or full-size cars. Of course there will be exceptions, like Corvettes and some later Camaros which are 12".

Re: Max AD Rearend Width

I've been wondering/looking into a rear axle for my 49 and saw this after doing some searching on here I see the ZR2 might be an option for me. If I get a stock 4X4 axle for $250 and have to buy spacers I might as well by a ZR2 for $300 and not have to use the spacers. My thought is to use off the shelf 16x10 rallye style rims with a 5 inch back space. I don't want to have to spend extra buck for a custom back space. worst case I have to find some used 15x8 with a 4 inch back space. Any thoughts, suggestion donations?

Re: Max AD Rearend Width

A 10" wheel with 5" BS means that you will have about 6" of wheel sticking out past the WMS, and the tire is going to stick out beyond that. What is the width of the ZR2 axle?

Re: Max AD Rearend Width

Raycow from my research on here a stock 4x4 is 60" and a ZR2 is 63"
10" is a dream 8" will probably be a reality

Re: Max AD Rearend Width

This is a qoute from Blue Jeep
<<ZR2 rear axle is pretty close to 63" wide. I used a regular 4wd rear axle in mine (60"), with stock 2wd s10 wheels (less backspacing than 4wd wheels) and I still need 1" spacers for the tires to clear the inner fenders. I think the ZR2 axle would be perfect for someone who doesn't want to tub the bed.>>

And I still feel that way. Plus, the ZR2 axle has a bigger ring and pinion and bigger axle tubes than a regular s10 axle.

Here's the 60" wide "regular" 4wd s10 axle before I did the spacers:

I run the plain-jane s10 wheels:
