Temperature sensor modification
I had offered to try and modify a sender from ½ NPT to ⅜ NPT for a member but he never followed thru...last week I got a PM from another member wanting to try one.
He sent me this one ACDelco....... G1852 I re-machined it on one of my CNC lathes...it looks like it will work just fine... sending it back for install....we'll see....?

Re: Temperature sensor modification
That's purty..that's a great idea..you should do some of these with metric threads to fit the LS heads..should be a fair demand for those...would beat drilling and tapping the head...

What would the cost for something like that be?

Re: Temperature sensor modification
The hole size in the ls head is 12x1.25...that would be to small to mod the sensor...it would have to be 12mm (.472) major od with 10.466mm (.412) minor od..

Re: Temperature sensor modification
I'll see if I have an old one to cut apart so I can find out exactly how much material it has in that area...you're correct....M12 X 1.25 would cut it down pretty small...

Re: Temperature sensor modification
I've seen other threads about folks doing this in the past. Great to see someone doing it again. I've found 2 VDO sensors that are very close to stock (electrically) in 1/8" NPT and come with a 3/8" donut adapter that works fairly well (there's an old thread on here about it). But nothing beats the stock sensors when paired up with the stock gauges. I'll definitely keep this in mind if I want to swap back to a stock sensor. This is clearly the best option.

Re: Temperature sensor modification
A1971Blazer,
Have you heard back on the install? I'm getting ready to put my Vortec together. I noticed that your threads look a lot nicer than the factory threads, so I imagine it was a good fit. Any concern with weakening the brass, or is there enough meat there that it's not a concern? By the way, do you live up by the Cherokee National Forest? I have family that lives just the other side of the mountains, between Blowing Rock and Lenoir, NC. It's definitely what I would call God's country. |

There is enough material on the sensor for the 3/8 NPT.......but that's the limit. I cut an old one apart to verify... I live near the Cherokee NF but I live on the Tennessee side.....about 30 minutes from the infamous "Tail of the Dragon" highway 129 through Deals Gap into North Carolina. If you want one modified...I'd be happy to do it.....

Re: Temperature sensor modification
I can attest both to Whit's excellent work and the functionality of that Delco part.
It's so nice to know the temp again. |

There were several lengthy discussions about trying to find a sensor that would fit and read the correct temperature..... I discovered that once upon a time, there was a member that was doing the modification, but for some reason, is no longer doing so. That's when I offered to do them... As for it fitting the BBC Vortec heads....I can't give you a definite answer. What is the engine designation number/code and year...I can probably find out..

Re: Temperature sensor modification
If I'm not mistaken all GM engines from the mid '80 and up have 3/8" NPT for the temp senders in the heads.
