Power steering box thread issue

Hi all,

So I've gone down the power steering route, using Captain Fabs stuff. It's all going very well so far, and I went to fit the hoses. But at the steering box end, the hoses don't seat at all? With the nuts tightened down, the pipe moves up and down a couple of mm. Am I missing something at all?
It looks like the threads in the box don't go down far enough, and that's the problem. Or is it something else?

I've attached a couple of pictures

Looks like you are missing the brass inserts that the flare on the tube seats on. Or the box is meant to have o ring type fittings on the line, I can;t tell for sure from the pictures.

What year is your steering box. I don't recall the year they changed to metric fittings, ?80. Someone here will know.

Great stuff, I can see the brass inserts on other steering boxes. The pump is new? I would have thought the pump would have come with them fitted? The pump is a 1970 one, and I believe it was 1980 for metric.

I think they sold you an O-Ring fitting type box.

Re: Power steering box thread issue

It certainly looks like it. Although my hoses are imperial threads, the o ring type appear to be post 1980 metric threads? I did read though that the threads are very close and would interchange? So maybe my options are, o ring metric hoses, or brass inserts to convert it to pre 1980 imperial?
That’s assuming the vendor doesn’t deal with it, but because of my location, returns to the US are difficult

x2 on they sold you an o-ring box. We sourced a '79 PS boxp and it came with brass inserts for the flared hose couplings. Good luck

The Metric with an o-ring style fittings started in 1980. It looks to me like you have a Metric steering box.

Metric oring style hoses are what you need for that box but you need metric at the other end at the pump for the high pressure one. You can change just the fitting in the pump though.

You can purchase adapter fittings from several different companies, Fragola, Speedway, Day Motorsports, that will make those to a#6an. Then you can go to your local hydraulics shop and they will make your pressure side for you...it will make life much easier for you...I do this on all my rigs anymore...

Re: Power steering box thread issue

Many thanks for some very helpful information. I'm still a bit unsure whether it is a post 80 metric box, or a pre 80 SAE, with the inserts missing? As both Cardone boxes have the same casting numbers, and the metric and SAE threads are almost the same.
But luckily, Lee manufacturing sell inserts for both. The vendor will also cover the cost of these as well.

Re: Power steering box thread issue

It was Lee manufacturing who supplied the inserts to convert to flared. It's all fitted, and the power steering all working now. Thanks
