Had a crazy idea.... Ive been thinking about putting in an electric fan to save on gas and gain a little hp in the deal. So then I was thinking, hmmm, an electric water pump would take some more load off the engine too. So, I went to summit and searched and wouldnt you know, they exist. Are these things just for racers? Anyone used one?

Mostly for the track, They dont move enough water to cool on the steet

They're not durable enough for continuous street use.

Besides, they don't save any energy. The alternator has to produce the extra power to drive the electric pump. There is no free power. It's all energy.

From what I've heard, they don't work so well for daily drivers, something about them running at constant speed and not having enough flow at longtime highway speeds. But that may be pure BS. I'd just check the flow ratings and compare to a stock pump. One other thing though, the water pump really doesn;t use much power, they turn pretty easy and its a centrifugal pump, pretty efficient. A comparison could be made by finding the HP required for the electric pump.

I'm seriously looking at the electric fans though, just for the power.

Hello Farside,
When I built my 350 engine for my 56 Chevy Bel-Air,I wanted to max out
my horsepower so I went with an electric water pump from CSI.
They say you save 5-8 HP.It has never failed me after driving from
Los Angeles to Hot August Nights in Lake Tahoe back thru Yosimitie
back to Los Angeles.I recently installed a mechanical water pump
on my 56 to eliminated what might be a weak link in my car but if you
need an edge to win a race,do what you can !

Don't forget.If your electric water pump works hard,
so does your alterrnater.

there is much info on this over on the z 28 forum, when the electric pump goes, it is just like a fuse (pop) and you have no water pump. some of those guys carry a spare with them, just like extra fuses.
