quick questions
Hello... I have some questions that I am hoping someone can help me out with... I am looking at buying a 68 chevy shortbed and am new to all of this so I am not entirely sure that what I have been told is accurate... I went to look at the truck yesterday and will post pictures in the near future... anyway it is a 350 350 with two dimesize spots of rust on the door panel, has an original wood bed, a protector plate (I think that is what he called it) and the rest of the body is in pretty good shape... interior needs to be replaced... asking for 4500... while talking to the guy who would help restore it there was some discussion about disc brakes vs drum brakes... Which do you prefer and why? Anyway just thought I would come on, introduce myself and ask for you advice on what to do... Thanks so much

Welcome to the board... For $4,500 you should be expecting a pretty solid truck... It's hard to say without pictures, but you might be able to do better... good luck.

You came to the right place for info.
Most people prefer the disc brkaes, they are twice as good as stock drums, and since drums seem to be neglected more than discs, it makes the comparison even worse. The protectoplate should be in the waranty booklet, but I'll bet he was actually refering to the VIN tag in the door jamb. Onless the vehicle is 100% stock, the protecto plate doesn't really add too much value, just increases the 'neat factor'. What are some of the other mods and details on this rig? $4500 is quite a bit, but there ARE plenty of trucks well worth that much cash. |

welcome to the board. before you buy the truck make sure to go over it. check the cab supports, cab corners, and go over the rockers with a magnet. imo if there is any bondo of any of the places listed have been rusted through the truck is over priced. for the most part if you look around you can find a truck with no rust or bondo for alot less. and i know there are quite a few people on this board that think there is no such thing as a rust free truck but here in new mexico as well as arizona there are quite a few rust free trucks

I am in north Denver, actually Westminster, CO and have two of these trucks, a K-10 SWB 72' and a C-10 SWB 71'. I would be more than happy to show you them so you can judge waht I have and what I paid and got for the money. It might give you a sense of what you can expect to get for the money you spend. My 71' which I just bought 2 weeks a go in CO Springs was 5000.00. It has a new rebuilt 350, 3 on the tree (to be changed) and absolutly no rust but need paint. Here's pic:

welcome from the great white north, no question, go with disc brakes, drum brakes are a very inefficient design, evn when properly maintained they stil are not nearly as good as discs, for your own safety go with discs

I perfer disc brakes, power brakes. The drum brakes can always be changed out. As for the price. It is hard for any one to say how much unless they live in your area. I noticed these trucks go for different amounts, depending where they are located at. I have a 72 LWB I gave $ 5000.00. NO RUST at all on the truck when I bought it. I have a small spot that poped up under my door. If the truck is something that you been wanting, I would go for it if it has everything you want in want of these trucks.

The truck is worth what someone in your area is willing to pay for it. The question you need to answer is, is worth it to you? No doubt there are plenty of newer cars and trucks out there in that price range if that's what you really want...
But look at it from this perspective...they don't make them like that anymore, every day there are fewer and fewer of them around, their looks and styling has withstood the test of time, they are relatively simple to own and operate, and they are a unique and practical vehicle that, if properly cared for, will maintain their value for as long as you own it. If at some point you decide to sell it, it's likely that someone else will appreciate the same things you enjoyed about your truck. You might have to get used to other people looking at your truck as you drive and giving you the thumbs up...or stopping you as you get out of your truck to ask you if you are interested in selling it...you might have to listen to some stories about similar trucks that total strangers want to tell you in the parking lot of the supermarket. Is it worth it? Only you can answer that one. |
