1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project

So.. as we are currently rebuilding my 69 C10, my mate and I weren't looking for a new project for the two of us. But then came along this Matching numbers 1950 GMC 3100 with I think a 235 CI motor and three on the tree manual.
We haven't picked it up yet, that'll happen the 19th of this month. but here are some pictures. As you can see a lot of work has already been done by the previous owner. we'll respect the color sceme and we'll rebuild it completely stock.








Don't hate the hater, but as much as I like the example below..I hate the wheels and the bellyscaping...but it could turn out something like this

yeah well it's a bit of a mystery untill be pick it up. I saw the doors and the hood are still in the bondo stage and the bed is still in it's original paint..so we're expecting some work there. but in the end it all looked good enough to take the gamble..because personally, finishing somebody elses project isn't my cup of tea I want to do it from scratch.

Complete american title that is yes, it got imported to the Netherlands in '95 or '96 and has never been finished..
oh and this luck Kees..comes at a price, don't be thinking this was a freebie

you mean the last picture? besides the wheels and the stand but yes, it's something we can look at as a guideline. definetly the black grill, runningboards and the hood and window trim is cool.

FYI...if its a numbers matching truck, that's not a 235 but probably GMC 228, one of the 'Jimmy 6s"...either way a very solid truck!

I'm trying to decode the VIN, but I could do with some help, because Google searches don't get me anyware.

After a couple of nights without any sleep it was finally time to pick up the truck. Saterday morning we first picked up the flatbed trailer and stuck some wrapping materials in the van.


driving there we were quite nervous, because we thought it would be a nice day, but the rain was relentless. But as we pulled up, the rain stopped and it turned out to be a reasonable day, which became perfect when we laid eyes on our new truck.



So cool, we drove it onto the trailer under it's own steam. the engine, gearbox works all very well!


It's in a better place now...OUR garage hahaha. it looks like a proper car shop now. '68 Charger, 71' Cuda, '50 3100 and the '69 C10


We put the hood on just to look if it lines out and it lookes good.


So what have we done so far? cleaned off all the dust. Sorting, Sorting, sorting, sorting. mounted the right headlight and chrome rings. assembled the parking brake, which was missing the rods and put in a new spring in the gear selector lever.
There is so much stuff to go through in about 15 crates that came with the car, but we'll figure it out, or I'll just ask you guys

Except for DAF and Spyker any other car we work on is foreign anyway..so better keep the american muscle alive right?

Shop is maby a bit overrated, we’re all hobby mechanics. The owner of the cuda is an orthodontist . my friend who’s helping me on my truck and the 3100 does something with airplane parts. The owner of the charger has an office job at Nissan and I sell enterprise hardware at Dell. (I hope you don’t mind me working for an AMERICAN company?)

yup, it's a 228. but what does the "Jimmy 6" mean? EDIT: GEE 'EM...Jimmy for slang..right, got it!

Working on the truck last Friday and came across some rot when we disassembled the parking brake. we'll have to strip it bare and see what's hidden underneeth, because we think there might be more than meets the eye.


and now for some questions..we wanted to mock up the door, just to figure out how all the trim goes in and in what sequense....
how in the world do you get the outer door window trim in and without damaging the paint?




Were missing one of the mounting rings for the front parklights , I'm told there are not for sale..is that true? if so I'll open a thread in the classifieds.


can anybody tell me why there are 2 holes in the side vent? what belongs there?

And now for some bad news...

the PO took off the vin tag to paint the body, our dutch DMV doesn't like that we found out. so we called them, and they'rer actually sending somebody to come and check if our truck is legit, or just a great pile of scrap metal..

We [being the idiots] ofcourse blindly trusted the PO when we bought the truck. I mean, c'mon! it's my mates neighbor, so surely he wouldn't have the stones to play us?
Now if we look closely, the vin tag has a different number then the title... so we'll just have to wait and see what's going to happen.

In the mean time, we didn't sit still. we installed the doors to fit them and see how straight they align with the body, also we put in the front window.
the doors look great, just need to be sanded lightly and then painted.
the front windows went in in 20min time, but we have a delux seal, so it needs a trim which we don't have yet. we were also contemplating a rubber molding to go in there, but not sure what would fit.
We also ha d 1 hole in the floor panel, that had to be fixed, so we cut it out, welded in a new piece and glued in some washers, because the bolts come from the bottem up.
then sanded it down and it's waiting for paint.

I know someone who has an AD truck and has serious troubles to get it registered, also wrong numbers...Hope it works out for you!

You could always order a new VIN plate and stamp the number on it thats on the paperwork. Of course you would need to check with your DMV and see that its ok to "restore" the VIN plate.

The guy came by yesterday, listened to what we had to say and took all his impressions, foto's and notes back to their office where they'll deliberate whether everything pans out.

if we get their approval, they'll "seal" the car, which means we can apply for a dutch registration ones the build is finished, but we cannot change anything until then. So engine, drivetrain etc etc has to stay as is.

Probably the Dutch reasoning of making sure everything is square before you can register it there.
