Possible Purchase

Here's the truck I'm thinking about looking at.
1972 C-10 Long Bed Stepside
6 Cyl / Three on the Tree

Goal would be to use this as a Parts / Home Depot Runner.

Lot's of receipts for work done over the last year.
Brakes
Tires
Alternator
Voltage Reg.
Battery Cables w/ Disconnect
Belts
Battery
Tune-Up
Turn Signal Switch

Known Issues:
2 holes rusted through the "L" bracket at the front of the bed. 2" x 1/2" each
Normal bed wood replaced with plywood
Front seat needs a cover
Wrong Taillights & side markers
Overspray on weather stripping
Paint looks "thick"

I've only seen pictures so far.
Rip it apart...LOL
Please let me know your thoughts + or -.
Thanks

Re: Possible Purchase

Very cool and unique truck. I like that they painted the tailgate letters, most people miss that. It would look amazing with some factory steelies and hubcaps.

Red flags like overspray on the weatherstripping tells me someone took shortcuts. Check it over for bondo really well before you buy.

Re: Possible Purchase

Yeah, I'll do the standard "old vehicle" look over.
Any specific frame / body mount, etc. places on these trucks that I should look extra close.

Also, please chime in on value assuming no bondo, mechanical or structural defects.
Thanks for the help!!

Since your in PA I'm sure you see a lot of rusted trucks. A non rusted truck is probably hard to come by out there. Being a long bed I'm thinking it is a 4-5k truck. Assuming no Bondi which is not likely with any repaint and good mechanicals.

Re: Possible Purchase

@66clow: Thanks for the reply.

I'm hoping for the best but expecting the worst.
We'll see when I get there.
I was actually surprised and not terribly disappointed by the underside pictures.

Actually, the fact that it's a long bed is a huge + for me.
I love the look of the stepwise but a short bed is useless to me for they way I want to use the truck.

Anyone else ave any other thoughts on the truck?

Re: Possible Purchase

that truck is sweet! i love the longbed stepside. Looks very nice and clean, no power steering is the only thing i can see that is somewhat of a knock, and maybe 3 on the tree unless you like that for setimental reasons. over all looks great, id snag it myself! probably worth around 6-9 here in california.

Thanks! I hope it actually is sweet!
No power steering = no problem for me.
This does not have it either:

Re: Possible Purchase

That sure looks like a nice truck. Assuming there's nothing hiding under that paint job I'd be all over it.
I might be a little prejudice. I like long step sides. And I agree some steelies would look great.

Nice Boss 302 by the way. I have a 1970 Mustang as well.

@FleetsidePaul
Nice Rides!
I see you are a Corvette guy too!
I have a 1969 427 Convertible with Air myself.

I may want to move on the C10.

Since you have one (1971 I'm guessing??) what do you see on the one I'm thinking about that is not correct for a 1972?

I like the rear bumper on yours.
If I get the truck, I'll be on the hunt for one of those.

Re: Possible Purchase

@notsolo:
I don't know, I have not seen it in person yet.
That being said your reply is exactly what I was looking for, Thanks!
Other than standard "old car/truck" inspection practices, I wanted to know some specific things to look for.
Heres another pic near the rocker. I think I see paint on the underside of the rocker when I zoom in. Right side 2/3rds down the picture.

Nothing wrong with the under side. Those under side pictures could look like that even if it was from a southern state...

manual steering can be converted, not sure how easy it is to convert a 6 cyl... I had a 67 Bel Air from 1975-1997. Most of the time I had it, it had manual steering. Manual steering is not that bed, you have to plan ahead in parking lots where you are going. I handled it OK, and I'm not a hulk type body, either....

Can't see any real negatives to not buy it. Glad they had receipts to show they were maintaining it.

I like it!!! Plain old pickup, can't beat that. Being a 72 it has good brakes to start with, no converting needed.

Re: Possible Purchase

@68Gold/white:
Thanks for your thoughts.
I was thinking the same thing about the underside.
From these lame pictures the underside looks fairly standard for an unrestored truck with 94K miles.
Manual steering is fine.
I get Popeye arms driving the Boss 302 though.
My Willys has manual steering as well, but it's small.

@demian5: Anything can do a burnout!

Re: Possible Purchase

Looks like a solid truck for here in pa.
The way the firewall gutter looks and the ps corner of the cowl, I would take a good flashlight and look way up under the dash for any rust and above the windshield real well since it looks like new glass and seal.

I find it hard too believe someone would go through the effort too paint the truck, but not the inner part of the fenders, rad support or inner wells. look under that battery too.
But yet the latches and catches, weatherstripping and tailgate chains.

But otherwise sweet a truck even the tops of and inner besides look really good .

Re: Possible Purchase

I could read the prior owners name and contact info on one of the service receipts so I called.
We spoke for 20-25 minutes; super nice!
Verified everything the current seller said including the no rust & no bondo claims. (We'll see.)
Confirmed that it ran like a champ and was great truck.
Said they gave the current seller the missing emblems and original radio and a "box of stuff".
Hopefully they have them.
Said the underside was very, very solid.
