k5 66

Joey~ap is going to do a 456 k5 conversion.
I pm'ed him and let him know that I had seen one like that in a wrecking yard.

I stumbled on it when I was looking for a good bedside, this one was already off, I picked it up, and then noticed the welds on the inside, I looked at it again, and then held it up next to the short fleet next to it... and haaay this thing was REAL short!!
I commented about it to kelly, and he said a guy spent an afternoon pulling the bedside off, before he realized that it was a "shortened" fleet...

Anyway, cool idea Joey~ap, I hope you get farther than these guys did (btw- you can't really tell but this is sitting on a 75 k5 4wd chassis)
also a drawing and a photoshop to fuel the fire!

Re: k5 66

Too cool...thanks for sharing. That thing on a 4x4 running gear would be quite a combination and very unique.

Re: k5 66

Thanks!

We are gettin there!

Spent Spring Break workin on it. Got the cab positioned on the K5 frame. I think I am going to take the brackets off the 66 frame and bolt/weld them on to the new frame. May line up easier.

I will get pix up as soon as I can.

Nice looking trucks, a K5 in that body style would be sharp.

Re: k5 66

see I dont understand the point of chopping a truck to fit it on a k5 frame? is it the wheel base they are after??? I think to make it look right you would need to some how chop a burban down! I have brought this topic up before and some people responded with some really nice photoshop burbans, second thing is will the top be removable? and if so, full vert or 3/4?? I'm anxious to see this play out, if i had the place and the tools I would be all over it!

Im doing it to get 4x4, disc brakes, power steering, tilt and all that stuff.

All the components were too far gone on my truck to save. Its going to actually be cheaper for me to do it this way.

I would have rather chopped down a 4x4 burb, but dont have the facilities.

Re: k5 66

so instead of cutting your bed sides, why not stretch the frame 4 inches??? i believe thats the diff between a blazer frame and a shortbed truck frame!

Re: k5 66

I thought a K5 was 106.5" and a SWB was 115"?

8.5" difference.

Re: k5 66

Are you guys going to shorten a fleet bed for this?
If so I think it would look better with a shortened long fleet bed (like the truck in the first pic)
I think the larger wheelwells would look better with the bigger 4wd tires.

are the wheel well openings actually bigger on a fleetside longbed than on a shortbed?

Re: k5 66

yes they are about 3 inches longer, you can kindof tell, if you look at the very first pic, and then the yellow sub, or the red 4wd.

Here is a short fleet, and then a "shortened" fleet.
I actually like the shortened box better.
