Non A/C Heater Core

Hey Gang. I recently inherited my Dads 1968 GMC 2500 Series truck and while going through it to make it road worthy I found the heater core was leaking. After some searching on the web, it shows that the inner fender is required to come out to remove the heater/blower box. My truck is a non A/C truck and after looking around a bit at the truck I have my doubts if that is true. Has anyone else changed a heater core in a non A/C truck without removing body panels, or even worse, cutting open the heater box to get to the heater core? Thank you in advance. Oh, Bytheway, I am a newbie here, and my name is Mark.
