Turn signals cancels too early

70 C20. Non tilt, not telescoping column. The turn signals seem to be working as intended, but they cancel too early for my taste. I have a road near me, where the road turns left, and I need to make a right turn. With the right turn signal on, the wheel only needs to turn about 1/8 turn to the left to click off the turn signal. I have to manually hold it while it is constantly trying to click off. I would like it to click off at closer to 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

Has anyone tried a replacement cam, or modifying the existing cam? The cam in my truck has 4 nubs on it. Looking at it installed, they are at about 2:00, 4:00, 7:30, and 10:30. The one that is really bugging me, is the nub at 2:00. I've been poking around online and see a bunch of these cams only have nubs at like 8:00 and 10:00. I'd really rather not modify my current cam, and I know that if I get a replacement, it will need to fit into the bearing like the current one does.

Thank you

If it only cancels prematurely in one direction then that would indicate your wheel is not centered. Center the wheel. Otherwise, you will need to find a different cam/horn ring or mod the one you have.

Re: Turn signals cancels too early

It does do it both ways. I spent a bit of time looking at how it all lines up and when what hits where. I just notice it more on the one side because of a road on the way home.

I saw LMC has the stock cam for like $12, so I bought one. When I get it, I'll try cutting off the nubs at 2:00 and 4:00 and see if that gets me the results I'm looking for.

Almost all of the cams from that vintage will fit your column. The biggest difference is the length of the horn projection. It is a different length for different steering wheels.

Re: Turn signals cancels too early

The main difference I saw was that the one I have is beveled at the edge. I believe it fits into the top bearing. Most of the ones I saw scrolling through Summit Racing have a flat bottom. These look like the one used on tilt columns with a spring.

I'll see how it goes modifying a stock cam first. If that isn't good enough, I'll look for another cam with a beveled edge.

Re: Turn signals cancels too early

On my 1978, I pushed the pin for the cloverleaf, and rotated in the direction needed.

Worked like a charm.

Re: Turn signals cancels too early

I bought a replacement cam from LMC and cut the 2 back tabs off. It is a lot better now. I can turn on the right turn signal, and steer to the left without it cancelling. The 2 remaining cams do seem to be spaced a bit wide. It will cancel when I turn on the left turn signal, then get in a left turn lane. Other ones I saw online has those 2 cams close together. I'm wondering if I want to play with it a bit more. Cut off the 2 there and epoxy on a piece or 2 of rod.
