i was gonna mention welding your spider gears, but i wouldnt.

A mini spool would be cheap and get you a locked rear differential.

Re: 1 wheele to posi? how

if its just a beater truck you can jsut weld the spider gears solid. if you want it to be somewhat reliaable for a while then spool it

If you weld the spider gears, both wheels have to turn the same speed when going around a corner. I have a friend who did it successfully long term in a light car with a heavy duty rear end, but I don't think I would. It made interesting noises when he would make a u-turn on my street.

Re: 1 wheele to posi? how

Forget all of that "welded spider" and "spool" stuff....while the spool is far more safe/stable from a breakage standpoint....neither is good for street driving.
The spool itself may be cheap....but installing it is not. Not only do you need a pro to do it, you have to go with a "C-clip" eliminator to make it work.

Welding the spiders does not require any of that, but it is unsafe. Not only is the heat from welding bad for everything inside the carrier, most people do it with the entire unit in the housing, that is even worse.

Assuming that we are talking about a "normal" 10 or 12 bolt here, the cheapest way is also the easiest... "Powertrax" It is an add-on posi unit that installs inside the original carrier. You don't have to get involved with the ring and pinion at all, so it can be done in the driveway be the average guy. The unit costs about $450, but other than gear lube and a gasket, there is no additional expense.

You might, find a factory "posi" after way too much looking...and it would still be junk (Gov-lock). I wouldn't waste the time, money, or effort to try to make that work...only for it to either be bad before you started, or fail on you.

Re: 1 wheele to posi? how

Going to chime in and agree with longhair he is exactly right. Dont go welding things. Spools are for race cars and sewing.

If you have a 12 bolt then its still tough to find a posi, but the factory ones do ok. If you dont know how to set up a rear end, and you arent mechanical in the head, you will need to have someone set it up for you. The powertrax will work for a driver and you wont get stuck in your driveway.

That being said, your tires make a difference as well. All of my cars have posi rears and all of them with low profile tires will get stuck in 1" of snow. In particular is the 98 Formula with 285 45 17 Z rated Eagle F1s, that will get stuck with 1/2" of snow, wont make it out of the driveway and if it starts snowing on my way home its a slip sliding good time driving like World of Outlaws at 20mph.

Re: 1 wheele to posi? how

I'd run the Powertrax. I've heard nothing but good stuff about them. my brother ran one for years, it worked great and the price is comperable with a Eaton unit without the cost or hassle of having to pull and set-up the rearend. this unit replaces the spider gears with a ratcheting clutchless posi unit.

Re: 1 wheele to posi? how

i would do the powertrax but thats not in the budget for a while.. i just drive around the truck around town and to school, never haul anything. i found this spool on ebay and it says no c clip conversion needed.. is it any good? i can get someone to install it.

Unless you know how or someone toinstall the spool for free. The cost of the spool, and having it Installed will be about the same as the Powertrax unit with less driveability. The choice is yours.

Re: 1 wheele to posi? how

Spools are just not good for street use, especially in a daily driver. If you ever let anyone else drive your truck, it is even more important NOT to install a spool. (Mini or full size, they act the same)
I see that you are in Maine....that has to equate to snow (the dreaded 4 letter word) You really don't want a spool in the snow.

If the Powertrax is out of the budget, I would go with Thumpin455's suggestion of tires. One tire spinning in grass is not that much worse than two. If you really are gettingstuck that easily, tires are probably a better bet anyway.
