engine vin?

Did chevy put the vin on the engine back in 1966? Reason I ask is i have a 66 with a 327, which i thought, according to the PO was the original engine.
This morning i got out of my truck and stumbled across the original dealer paperwork that was wadded up underneath the seat springs. Cool Find, however it says

283 Cu. In v-8 on it!!!!!!!

it goes on later to say in the specs "engine conversion" so maybe that covers the switch to 327?

see pic.

Re: engine vin?

Z20 Engine Conversion does not mean your engine was changed or swapped out. Engine conversion simply means they converted a SMOG engine or A.I.R. engine on the assembly line to a NON Smog engine by plugging the smog tube holes Look at your exhaust manifolds, they should have plugs in them. I have a 1966 250 Six with "Engine Conversion" The smog tubes went into the head on a six. All the holes are plugged in that engine.

This is your Build Sheet and it states many important numbers and codes in those boxes that tell a lot about your truck.

What is the stamped code on the front of your block ? Any pictures of your engine ? Is the Spid sheet or protecto plate in the glove box. Make sure the VIN on the paper you are posting above matches the vin plate on the truck, .

Re: engine vin?

Also, normally you will not see a VIN number stamped on the engine in these trucks, Just the assembly date and engine suffix.

Re: engine vin?

Looks like on the top of the block it says "firing order 184866_ _" I can't make out the last two digits.

Also looks like there is an open bolt hole on either side of the block along the frame.

Re: engine vin?

if you have the protecto plate in your owners book it will have the engine vin to match the stamp vin number on the engine pad . as Jon said it is not your trucks vin number , it would be the engine vin which is different

Your reading this on the intake, not the "block"

Re: engine vin?

Heres what your looking for. This is right in front of the passenger side cylinder head just above the edge of the water pump.

This engine has the VIN on the left and the Assembly date and engine Suffix on the right of the pad. This is what will tell you what the engine is, the last two letters on the right. In this case it looks like F0518HE . Give us your letters and we can help.

Re: engine vin?

And what it says on the intake is Firing order 18436572. That may come in handy later if you decide to tune it up.

Re: engine vin?

On your build sheet above, in the upper left section in box 27 can you read the letter code in that box ? Does it have a star next to it ?

Re: engine vin?

Yes, it means 283 Powerglide with A.I.R. and I believe since the truck was not sold in California it received the Engine Conversion meaning they plugged the smog stuff on the assembly line. Now go look at your front engine pad on your block and see if those letters WH are on the pad I showed you above.
