Mesquite 1966 C10 - LS3 W/Air Ride

Edited June 22,2016

Truck is now complete (did I just say that ) with the following:

Ridetech Air Ride System, LS3 crate engine with added Magnuson Heartbeat Supercharger, T56 Magnum 6 Speed, Vintage Air A/C, IDIDIT Steering Column, Modified Bench Seat, Birdseye Maple Bed, Boss 338 Wheels, and Sunburst Orange Paint.

This motor combination produced 575hp, 531 Torque to the rear wheels on a dyno.

This build went from November 2011 to June 2016, WOW I'm slow, but after you read this thread you will notice how life can get in the way. As most, there is more to this thread than the building of the truck. This was my 3rd classic restoration but my first frame off. It had many challenges and I did many things more than once. So enjoy the pictures and the stories, this board is a wonderful place and I could not have done this without it. I hope you find this Thread Useful!

This project is starting one year after my Dad passed away, he purchased this truck new in 1966, sold it in 2001, engine was blown shortly after and it sit in a caliche pit until I finally convienced him to sell the truck back to me

So here we go..... Craig

Re: Mesquite 1966 C10

Welcome, You have a very solid looking truck to restore. Im glad you got your truck back that your dad owned. I was trying a few years ago to get my dads old 71 GMC back that he sold when I was like 8 but I was a few months to late. It was sold to the crusher. I cant wait to see your build on it. Im building a 64 C10 also.

Hi Alan, I have been lurking here for a year, needless to say I'm a fan of your work. Plan for now, down to frame, powder coat, air ride, leaning toward's LS motor, back to manual but not 3 on tree , still looking for that perfect color combo.

Welcome. Sorry to hear of your father's passing, but it is great that you were able to get his truck back. Love the airplanes hanging on the wall too.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Craig, thanks for the comment and it sounds like you have a solid plan. Your color will come to ya. Whats' your favorite color?

BTW I wish gun racks would come back in style.

Re: Mesquite 1966 C10

I'm thinking some type of two tone with red and white, just not sure where to make the transition yet. The gun rack is sweet.

Re: Mesquite 1966 C10

I assume most would find this to be extreme modification for power steering?

Re: Mesquite 1966 C10

Got some time to work on the truck today. Spent two hours with power washer before I proceeded to remove the suspension. Could have spent three but my arms were tired

I've still got my old rack from a truck I had years ago, and since it matches up perfectly with holes already drilled in the inside panel, I'll be putting it in Tanya when finished. My wife is dreading it already....

Seriously though, nice work on the progress. That power steering "mod" is rough, what"s your thought on repairing it?

Re: Mesquite 1966 C10

Not sure yet, need to get it straight and see how much material is missing. I'm guessing I will need to reinforce or add some material to inside of the frame, not sure I can fill with weld?

Re: Mesquite 1966 C10

Thanks to everyone for the kind words about my Dad the truck and the shop. Lots of memories going hunting and to the lake in that truck. Me and my Dad did a minor restore about 25 years ago so this is my second time around with this truck. Much more involved this time.

I added onto the shop to make room for this build, my lawn equipment, boat and wood working stuff is in the lean to, truck is in the original shop on the right. Was a tough summer to be working with metal but well worth it.
