How much should I pay?

I'm looking for a 68-72 c10 fleet short bed. wondering what I should be looking to pay?

found a 72 body is about 90% correct. Interior is all there but torn apart. Engine does not run. He wants $3900, is that a good price? About 1 1/2 hours away.

Also found a 1970 short bed entire front end is dismantle and other parts of the truck in pieces. body looks to be 75% finished. Owner swears everything is there. Wants $2800, comes with a rebuilt big block, is about 3 three hour drive away to take a look.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I have been seeing a lot of them here lately sell for $2K to $3K range in pretty good shape , like the 1967 C10 short fleetside the guy sold on here the other day , all original running truck some origial paint needed rocker and corner's as any one you will find and he sold it for $2800.00
I have seen a couple on ebay that looked interesting , also they was a guy on here with a 68 ? can't remember his user name he had a NICE 68 long bed fleetside that he shortened AND DID A KILLER JOB !!!!!!!! it was a sharp truck and did not need to much more he was wanting $4500.00 for it ? don't know if he sold it or not , anyway under $5K should score you one ,,

GOOD LUCK !

Re: How much should I pay?

The 72 appears to be a clean truck. so under 4K is a good price with no rust and one 6 inch dent in the bedside? again the truck does not run.

Re: How much should I pay?

don't know if this would help in the decision...... but the '72 has front disc brakes and 5 on 5 wheel bolt pattern (which means more wheel options).

plus the no rust issue is saving time consuming body work.

just my .02

Re: How much should I pay?

I guess the 72 has leafs in the rear instead of coils. Did they come like this? Also it has a metal bed, was wood an option? Yeah ya it has an A/C dash.

Re: How much should I pay?

I would think you could find something running in Cailfornia for 3 grand. Myself a basket case (pieces n parts) would have to be pretty darn nice around 3 grand. Here in the midwest with the economy the way it is a basket case (non running)would run from 800 to 1800 but thats talking typical rust for the area too. Being S/B couple hundred more possibly.

Would the leafs be an advantage over coils in the rear?

Re: How much should I pay?

I'd prefer to have a coil suspension, but that is my owe preference; and it also depends on your plans for the truck.

In Cali, you should be able to locate a ton of great looking/running trucks for $3-5k.

Re: How much should I pay?

I think they are a little more cause I'm looking for a short bed. So on the leaf spring rear suspended trucks do they have trailing arms also? I have never scene a 67-72 with leafs.

I plan to run the truck at stock height or possibly a small drop and run a lq9 and 4l80e in it. Big plan, but not enough money!

Re: How much should I pay?

what do you guys thinks about this?
1970 Chevy C10 shortbed pickup. An original 402, standard shift truck, A/C, this one now has a new 454 and a th350 automatic with a B&M floor shifter. Currently, the trucks hood, fenders adn interior are disassembled for the purpose of being repainted. All the necessary parts to reassemble the truck are marked , including the bolts. Truck was a daily driver before we took the body panels off for paint. The truck is currently painted gray, but the paint is oxidized. The body is virtually perfect. The motor was rebuilt several years ago and has zero miles. Coil spring rear suspension for those the like to cruise or want to lower the vehicle. This truck is perfect for somebody wants a daily driver or the perfect specimen for a restoration. $2800

Sound like a good deal?
Truck is in pieces but is supposed to be complete.

Re: How much should I pay?

Off topic but does anyone know how wide the trucks are from outside of tire to outside of tire? I'm wondering if the trailer I have will work if I find a non-driveable truck.

Re: How much should I pay?

One thing to think about is if you have never done major work on a truck like this then you might want to get the one that is the most complete.
its really hard to put a truck back together that you have never worked on or was the one who took it apart. Seek an find whats this bolt go to and what the hell is that part type of thing. Just my 2 cents.

Re: How much should I pay?

I paid $700 for my '69 C20 from the original owner. 14,000 mi on the 350 crate in so cal. That was rare but the deals are out there. Find someone who has lost interest in their truck rather than someone who is looking for and investment. usually the leaf springs were for the C20's but all could have them I guess. I am planning on doing alot of work on it so I wanted to start with the best platform I could rather than burning out on endless rust repair

Re: How much should I pay?

I would not buy a disassembled truck. You can't verify much of the owner info. How do you know the engine has 0 miles? How do you konow the tranny, rearend, and other parts are rebuilt? It's a huge risk, and one that is not worth taking. The economy is poor in many areas which means that you should be able to find a reasonably priced running shortbed in the price ranges that you have listed above.

Re: How much should I pay?

For the kind of money you are looking to spend, you can get one that is ready to drive, or extreme close too it, look look look, it may take some time, but when you find the one, you will know it.

Re: How much should I pay?

Thanks for all the replies! I agree about waiting for an assembled truck with little to no rust. That what I'm going to wait for.

Bradbury, nice find!

I have been looking on this site, craigslist in different areas and ebay.
Can you think of anywhere else I should be looking.

Re: How much should I pay?

I would drive the parts of town that you don't normally drive and see if you see any old forgotten projects that are sitting in someones back yard. Or put the word out to your friends. That's how I found mine, an old friend came up to me and said that his neighbor was 90 years old and looking to get rid of his old fishing truck... he died nine months after selling it to me. You just never know what the story is on some of these trucks you see on the side of someones house, they might have just not gotten around to listing it yet. But I totally agree with 71, buying a whole bunch of parts that someone says go together is putting a lot of faith in the unknown. there is a guy on craigs list in victorville that had asperations of going into business rebuilding the 67-72 years and accumulated around 50 trucks, he kind of lost interest in the venture and has been trying to sell the rest of his stock. from the listing he has quite a lot but he never has any pics.
