Re: tranny cooler suggestions( 700r4)
I have run a 700r4 for 11 years without an additional trans cooler (just the radiator), I occasionally pull a 4000 pound boat to the coast, 400 miles round trip...still works like it should.

Re: tranny cooler suggestions( 700r4)
You will definately like it.
Has anyone come up with a better way to lock the converter when not in OD? I have a little toggle switch under the dash that works great, but I am always scared I will forget to turn it on when towing. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: tranny cooler suggestions( 700r4)
So the toggle switch is optional if not towing?
I will not be towing. Won't say never but I don't own a trailer or a boat. LOL

Re: tranny cooler suggestions( 700r4)
The way mine works (sounds the same as the others) is that the converter locks up automatically when it shifts to 4th (OD), if I put the gear selector in 1,2,or 3, I flip the toggle switch that locks up the converter. I only shift to 3rd when I am towing my big boat to keep the revs up a bit, just works better. You may use 1st or second in a traffic jam or cruisin the strip at a rod run (but you probably dont need to lock it up then).
One time I forgot to flip the toggle towing the big boat (4000#) and the trans got hot FAST, flipped switch and it went right back to normal. Wiring the toggle is very easy, fuse box to toggle to plug on trans. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: tranny cooler suggestions( 700r4)
Always put the biggest cooler you can find, for every 20 degrees you lower the trans fluid temp, you double the life of your transmission. problem with heat in a transmission is it hardens the rubber seals, then you get pressure leaks and then it starts slipping clutches and goes to hell from there, never hurts to install a cooler. the newer stacked type coolers work much better than the old fin and tube types.

Re: tranny cooler suggestions( 700r4)
What about the old story, "Don't tow in overdrive with a 700R4?" Is that true?

Re: tranny cooler suggestions( 700r4)
So you are towing in overdrive with the converter locked? I have one of these transmissions in my 71, and want to know if I can get away with that.
