All probably true but drum brakes don't bother me. Lets me know im driving a "real" truck. As long as they are cleaned and adjusted properly, they do the job. They are more maintanence as the self adjusters rarely do their job but since im wrenchin on it anyway...

I have manual drums on 4 of my 6 vehicles.

How you drive has alot to do with it too. For those that speed alot and come up on stop signs quick, disc brakes would be for you. Drive down long steep hills alot? Go with the discs.

actully there is more braking area on a drum set-up than on a disc set-up.roughly 50%more to be more accurate.and thats per drum also. my 4whl drums stop on a dime w/no prob.as long as i keep up w/ maintenance.

The problem with drum brakes is all the other cars on the road with disc. They can stop quicker, it is a proven fact. So no matter how good your drums work, no matter if there is a hill, no matter how used to them you are, if some little sweetie putting on her lipstick slams on the brakes in front of you, you will run into her rear end and when the cops get there they will write you the ticket. End of story.

I have them, and mine are worse than the typical drums. The dope smokin old man couldn't figure out the self adjusters, so he threw them away.
On top of that, it has multiple other brake system trouble. But, it is safe enough. As long as you know you can't release the pedal all the way (that's when you lose pressure) you'll be alright.
The main trouble with drums, is they do not cool very well. If you get the kevlar shoes, and are able to find a machine shop that is willing to drill the braking surface on the drum, (kinda like cross drilled rotors) then you'll have drums that can out perform discs. (stock ones anyways)
I still refer to them as delayers though.

Actually, when I got my 70 it had drums, I found that under 40mph (city driving) the truck could out stop a lot of newer trucks, I had almost been rear ended by a couple little cars too. But after a few 70mph braking attempts I decided that the drums werent for me. Brake fade is not fun. Now this truck will stop better than most non abs trucks.

I hope you mean you have hydralic drums. Mechanical has been obsolete since the 20's or 30's and illegal to operate on buplic roads in some states.

By tossing a power brake booster in a manual drum truck, I discovered that you can really apply a lot of force to the brakes. Is it safe? Who knows, but the I remember pre-power days going down a hill, seeing a stop sign at the bottom, downshifting, putting every ounce of force my body could muster, butt off the seat, tryign to brake this beast, and just rolling through the intersection, traffic be damned.
Now, I have to be careful by putting only light pressure on the pedal, or all the wheels will lock up. Works great, but I am sure my line pressures are like 200% rated. This 25 dollar trick saved my truck from banishment. That is why I love these trucks, is there any tricks that are MORE than 25 bucks???????

I guess the guys who prove the fact have not heard of kevlar shoes I put these on my truck and it stops like you would not believe. I can even lock them up with out much preasure. The main benefit disc have over drum is cooling. If you are interested in the kevlars you can check out www.praisedynobrake.com . The owner, John is a stand up guy and backs his stuff up 100%.

Well if they play Metalica on their website,I going rite home and tearing off my disc,wheres the drums at. Maybe I get one off my riding lawnmower,it's only a couple of inches in diameter, but hay if I put kevlar pads on it should work. ROTFLMFAO

the problem with the drums on ours is the damn heat dissipatiuon, if you drive your truck all day as a daily driver, you iwl have major brake fade, they are only 11x2 up there, if you actually use your truck as primary vehicle then you iwll have problems, i got inlots of trouble in the 68 C10 for not making stop sigsm i could not make them even with new lines, m cylinder, wheel cylinders, hardware, hoses and all, they are not meant for what we want to use them for, thats why they went to front disc brakes and thne rear ones later on, its the whole reason,. they are not practical for actual use all the time, they found out late and fixed it late. theres not even any finds on the damn things, thats insane in itself.

Randy, I have never had any brake fade with the kevlar shoes. That includes coming down the mountains towing almost 5000lbs.

Good grief, where and how do you guys drive?

Last year, I installed new shoes all around on my 68C10 and I drive Interstate 35 every weekend going to the little ol' lady's place. I drive it every day to & from work here in town and I've driven it to DFW & back. I have had no problems that I can attribute to the brakes. I don't speed to intersections and I pump if I have to stop quicker than normal.

Works like a champ, in my opinion.

The kevlar shoes have a diferant type of adhisave. On parts store shoes, when you stomp the woah pedal, the heat reacts with the adhesive and causes a gas, which forces the shoes (or pads) away from the braking surface.
Kevlar is awsome.

Thanks for tip on the kevlar brakes I have been bracket racing the truck runs 100 thru the traps and if I take it out of gear I have trouble stopping by the second return road.

I drive mine every day and have yet to have brake fade. I'd sure like to see how you guys drive! For those that can't stop in time because of the import in front of you, maybe you shouldn't tailgate??? Or maybe you guys aren't installing/adjusting the brakes correctly? Bring those trucks to my house and I'll have you stopping correctly. LOL

If you drive like a "normal" person, drum brakes are more than enough. Cars and trucks used drum brakes for a very long time. If they were as bad as you guys describe them, there wouldn't be any of these trucks left! Or front ends anyway.

Not to insult anyone but I think too many people believe everything they read in magazines. I base my opinion on actual use, not what everyone else is doing or says. Someone in the magazine swaps to discs and right away everyone has to do it. HEI is another one as well as the newer transmissions. If I hear about the 700R4 transmission swap again, I think I'll scream! LOL And I see im not alone by reading some of the replies so there must be some truth to what im saying.

It's ok if you want to do these changes to your truck but that doesn't mean everyone should or has too. Some of us like our trucks the way the general built them. If I wanted all the "cushy", "comfy" add on's, I'd buy a new truck. Oh yeh, and I like manual steering too.

Well, it is true if you drive slow you dont need so much brake.....
But over 65 miles per hour, drums are scary. Especially if they are manual.
Disc brakes do work better, but perhaps you dont need them, that is why there is no law requiring them.
I just like my truck a little easier to handle, and the manual everything was tiring. I now have power steering and brakes in my burb, and enjoy it more. To each his own.
