4X4 from 2WD any suggestions?
I just recently found this site and love reading all the posts so decided I might ask a question myself. I have a 77 SBSS GMC and a 79 3/4 ton Chevy I will be putting them together to make one good vehicle. Neither of these are 4X4s and I am considering making the short box into one. I have a 454 with a blower possibly putting out between 500 -550 HP. Does anyone have any recommendations for transfer case, transmission, and axles? How difficult will it be to switch it over? And what about newer systems or even AWD?

Easiest: Find a donor 4x2 frame and switch the bodypanels.

If it were me and I wanted a serious off road capable truck, I would build the 79 3/4 ton. Primarily because it's a LWB, and I think they trucks better and perform better off road.
Of course that depends on the terrain in your area. Down here where we have mostly flat terrain, and 4 wheeling usually means mud, a LWB has the advantage.

wasn't there a pretty detailed post on here a few years ago about doing this swap? Seems like the guy made his blazer 2wd.

Thanks for all the posts. I am planning to make this more of a show truck than an off road truck. I have considered swaping bodies with a newer truck. Thought I would get some input from all you more experienced truckers first. I always have the option of leaving it a 4X2 and putting on some fatties on the back. Thanx again.
