I'm up next for the weird noise help...

RIGHT turns only, medium to low speed only (approx 10-25 mph) brakes not pressed - - - Get a quiet thunk thunk thunk near left front wheel (I think...) that is directly proportional to speed (wheel rpm). So, no indications of wear, and this noise is clearly connected to speed and, more importantly, suspension loaded in a RIGHT hand turn only.

No cracked brake pads. No new wheel weights on the inside of the wheel, etc etc. Actually, NO changes in quite some time - kinda started out of nowhere.

I b stumped.
Thoughts?

EDIT: Opps, sorry - this is on my '01 1500 Silverado Z71 (4x4)

Jocko my first thought would be that you might have a hub assembly going bad. My 00 Sierra Z71 4x4 was making the same thunk thunk noise while turning and that's what it turned out to be.

Thanks for the reply. Guess I'm a little cornfused - can you elaborate on how a hub could go bad? The hub itself? Or are you talkin bout the ball joints, roller bearings, etc... I'm gonna have to dig into it this weekend - any hints on what to look for exactly would be helpful. Thanks again for the reply - much appreciated.

The hub assembly is what houses the wheel bearing so the wheel bearing may have gone bad. If that's the case they are sold as an entire assembly. I believe it also houses the abs speed sensor as well. One thing to look for if that's your problem is top to bottom play in the wheel and tire.

Re: I'm up next for the weird noise help...

Thanks Justin - I'm more familiar with older, removeable wheel bearings. I understand what you're saying, bearings bad, gotta replace the whol hub assembly. Looked in my service manual, and I don't even own a torque wrench that goes to 133 ft-lbs(!). Ha! Could also be the driver side cv joint - would lend itself to the turn only issue also - as does the bearing. Now that I realize what you're talkin about, I know how to check it. Will dig into it tomorrow night after work. Just what I had planned for my day off. Sweet... Thanks again for your help - much appreciated.

Re: I'm up next for the weird noise help...

checked this a.m. - the hub is definitely the issue. Wondering if I should replace both sides even though driver's side is the only bad one. I have 160K miles on the truck. I kind of subscribe to the "if it aint broke don't fix it" mentality - but then again, I did pre-emptively change my fuel pump at 150K....

I'm just gonna do one - some of these hubs last forever. Apparently some don't! But it gave good warning, so I'll just roll with it. No pun intended.

Glad you know what the problem is! If you don't replace the other side now I'd definitely keep an eye on it. I had to replace the passenger side about 5 or 6 months after replacing the driver side.

Re: I'm up next for the weird noise help...

I have the same weird noise you described. I have about 180K on mine with ALOT of heavy towing. I have heard it once or twice in the past week. I wasn't sure and yes mostall the new ones have a "hub assembly". I changed them for a girl at work on a Gran Prix she had, DON'T buythem at Autozone. Those lasted 12 months and she paid me to change them again!
