radiator question

right now I have a jegs radiator in my truck. runs cool, but when I idle for a long time with the a/c on the temp creeps up. this is a 2 row radiator. I found the 3 row champion direct bolt in on ebay and ordered it and it came in today. measured both. the core size is exactly the same the thickness on both is 2.5 so lxwxh is the same on both one is 2 row and the other is 3 row but the 3 row has smaller rows to fit 3 in place of 2. so my question is. will the 3 row cool any better seing as how they are still the same thickness? sorry for all the detail just want an acurate answer.

I'm guessing, as I am not a cooling system expert. I would think that it would cool better as there is a larger surface area, with three rows, for the coolant to dissipate energy.

see thats the thing I am concerned with is the 3 rows are the same width as the 2. both radiators are 2.5" thick.

protrash is 100% correct surface area and fin count per square inch are the main things to look for in an efficient cooling system

I'm in the process of looking for a new radiator for my truck. I came across this article that explains the differences that you are seeing. I'm sure that your Jegs radiator has the 1" tubes, but I would double check.

yeah the older copper had a lot less fins as a new aluminum. on the other hand both radiators have the same fins per inch. one just has 2 rows and the other is 3 squeezed into the same size core.

For long term idle, the fans and water flow volume are both important. so you need good fans and a good water pump.

I am running the Champion in my 65 with a 6.0 l LS2 and 2 10" SPAL fans. After a long idle one fan comes on for about 1 min. then cycles every few minutes. The second fan has never come on, other than for me to force it on with the scan tool to be sure it works. I am talking high 90's in SC.

I am installing AC now so I don't know how that will work but I am really pleased with the Champion so far.
