Ash tray to powerport conversion

Had the ashtray out while replacing the heater core. Had an idea. This is the result. The real cigarette lighter port still works. Keep the lighter insert in the glove box as it doesn't fit properly and will sometimes power on by itself. I don't smoke but one never knows when fire might be useful.

Grounded the power port to the frame of the ash tray holder. Used the existing lighter power wire for the hot side. Used a dremmel tool to make the holes for the two screws. Had to grind the screws ends off to shorten to fit. Had to remove a little material from the area around the screws on the power port so the ash tray unit would close normally when not in use. Lets the power port sit a bit deeper in the opening.

Re: Ash tray to powerport conversion

On topic of poor fighting lighters, you could probably refit a newer GM power point in place of the lighter body. The 2010+ express and savannas have a nice hinged cpver power point(s) in the dash.
