CA smog laws

Well, turns out that now all vehicles made from '76 and on will have to be smogged. Thank God I have a '72, but I still don't like it. It just shows our govenor is a moron who does what ever he feels like as long as it won't cause a controversy. I hate him and I'm glad I didn't vote for him. Are there any states that exempt classic vehicles, are gun friendly, and will take me? I'm getting sick of watching my state go bad.

I don't know if Oregon will take you (you're from California, after all ), but our classic vehicle exemptions start at 25 years old, and it is a 'Shall Issue' state regarding concealed carry permits.

25 years in Oregon??? No way. Nothing is smogged where I live. The only places in Oregon where smog is required is Medford and Portland. Everywhere else, nothing gets smogged. Buy a 1999 Chevy or a 1989, NO SMOG! DMV even has a drive through. NO weight fees either... Also, the lic fees are $%3 for 2 years! Thats $26.50 a year. That went up from $15 a year ago. Buy a $50,000 truck and no weight fee and you pay $26.50 a year, along with NO SALES TAX!

Correct me if im wrong, but I thought it was 1973 and older that did not have to be smogged? He move it to 1976 and older? This is not a good thing?
I had heard they were trying to have 1960 and up get smogged.

They removed the rolling 30 years component of the legislature. Used to be a 30 year time frame 2004=1974 was expempt, 2005=1975 was exempt, so forth, so on.

They also can change the year now without going back to courts or the books to get it to pass. It's just a matter of writing it.

Yeah, I was wrong all around, except on the gun laws. Thanks for clarifying. I live in Newberg, but in Washington County, and so have to have my vehicles DEQ'ed. Most of Oregon, geographically speaking, you don't have to have emissions checked.

So the governator signed that a.b. 2683? I thought for sure that with Leno yelling at him he might just veto it.

The Governator

As I was leaving Sacramento, I noticed a shirt for sale with Ahnold's picture and "The Governator" on it. I have received numerous comments about my shirt....none negative. Nobody had anything to say about his performance as governor, tho.

I do think it was kinda cheesy of him when he went to Nevada (early August) and did his grandstanding to encourage businesses to invest in California. I wonder if he "terminated" the business environment of CA?

Lay off of him, though. He's just tryin' to make a livin'!

From what they say on the news, this affects 2009 and up vehicles and automakers are going to sue to get it overturned.

So legislation was a rider to the new car smog laws? Couldn't get it to pass on its own merit so snuck it in.... Gotta luv it. (not)

Looks like Californicate is getting ALL the government they are paying for.
Boy, am I glad I turned down the job offer to move to the Sacremento area.
What's next, you need to file an environmental impact statement to "break wind"?

I believe the reason this was done is because it's the first year that catalytic converters were installed, not that it has anything to do with anything other than it's kind of a "bench mark"..... and really, who wants to claim anything newer than that as a "classic".

Can you imagine going to a show or swap meet and hear, "Hey man, check out my 'K-Car'....isn't it a cool classic?"

ILIVE4TRUCKS, do you have to rub it in? Your gas prices are way lower too. We just passed through your town a few hours ago coming home from the Ducks game.

Yes you do have to pass smog.....all vehicles 30 years or OLDER have to be smogged!!!!!

Here's the article....oh BTW....from what I hear....the Governor is also working on legislation for all vehicle parts of 1984 and older to not be as available like they are now.....kind of a new way to force you to buy a new car. Who will want to pay 300 bucks for a water pump? Btter fix it now and not drive it much if you plan on keeping it. It may cost you an arm and a legg.

Calif. Classic Car Lovers Dismayed by New Law
Sat 25 September, 2004 02:12

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Lovers of California's classic cars, celebrated in the Beach Boys song for "fun, fun, fun," worried that a new state law could take their T-birds and little deuce coupes away.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill requiring that cars 30 years and older be tested under California's strict smog regulations, closing a loophole over the protests of classic car collectors, including "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno.

Aides said the bill signed on Thursday would help the state's air quality. California also approved the nation's most stringent rules to reduce auto emissions linked to global warming this week.

But classic car hobbyists argued their cars have little effect on the state's smog.

"We're not too excited about it. The impact on the environment by classic cars is minimal," said John Halstead, president of the Bakersfield Camaro Club. "Most of the cars don't make it out of the garage for any other reason than for car shows once or twice a month in the summer."

The exact number of classic cars in California is unknown, but the state has hundreds of clubs for car hobbyists.

Leno, on whose show Schwarzenegger announced he would run for governor, protested personally against the bill, said Marva Diaz, legislative director for Assembly Member Sally Lieber, who wrote the bill.

Leno called Lieber's office twice to register his displeasure, Diaz said.

"He was very upset the first time," Diaz said. "He thought his whole collection would have to be smog-checked."

"The second time he called he was upset because he had been told the assemblywomen had said on the radio that he supported the bill," Diaz said. "He wanted to make sure it was clear to me to tell her that he remained opposed."

GAs in Grants Pass is the same as Redding Calif. Where did you find it for less????? Regular unleaded is $2.09 at most stations. You can buy the watered down stuff at ARCO for $1.99 but you wont make it over the I-5 Grade home! ping ping ping.... YEs its true that we smog NOTHING! That is good. We also have no sales tax and the yearly lic tag on anything, car or truck is $22.50 a year, up from the $15 of last year and no weight fees. Our state income tax is 3 x more than Calif. Property taxes are 1/2 less than Calif.. Yes, life is good in Oregon and Im only 55 miles from the Calif line! In the other direction, Im 80 miles to the beach.. Lakes and rivers everywhere up here. Just NO JOBS!
