Top End Rebuild Made a Huge Difference

Rebuilt the topend on my 87' 454 TBI motor. Wow, what an amazing difference. Granted I fixed a bunch of problems in the process: rebuilt heads, replaced TBI gaskets, blocked EGR, removed air injection, added new stock exhaust manifolds, O2 sensor, replaced cat with straight pipe. The changes really woke up the motor. Now it has plenty of power!

Re: Top End Rebuild Made a Huge Difference

Almost every engine I have torn down that has went south after a top end overhaul was because the oil pump pickup was stopped up with sludge , RTV or gasket material that was knocked loose during the top end overhaul. Just something to look out for.

Pull the pan after 1500 miles to rinse it out. Install a fresh oil pump, pump drive, & pickup. Maybe the front and rear main seals too? Timing chain kit? It's a slippery slope.

Maybe just the clean pan and new oil pump, pickup, n drive.
