Any of guys ever see a 4.3 V6 in our years trucks??

I called about a truck last night they say thats what is in it, its 70 3/4. I'm thinking about buying it just to say I've had one. They claim it runs good in the old truck.

Re: Any of guys ever see a 4.3 V6 in our years trucks??

Don't recall offhand, but I'm pretty sure I saw one on the board here in the past......wanna say it was a Brown truck. Regardless, those 4.3's are great motors and have been around for quite some time. Think they make something like 180hp.

All they are essentially is a standard V8 with 2 cylinders lopped off. They've been putting them in full size trucks and vans for years and still do, though they are only 1/2 ton models.

I do wonder how much longer they will be around with the advent of the new 300hp V6 that is in the Camaro.

Re: Any of guys ever see a 4.3 V6 in our years trucks??

i had an 88 chevy 2wd 1/2 ton with one in it. It was pretty gutless outside of 1st gear. I don't think I'd ever buy one again unless it was for a woods crawler. Was reliable though. If stock, they just don't have enough power for maintaining speed up hills, especially when hauling something.

It would be cool to say you've had one.... but, my brother has one in his S10 and its gutless, as stated above. But they are good running motors and it would be cool to see one in one of these trucks for the heck of it never seen one installed in a 67-72.

Sacto Jim's right,there is a member here with a '67 Stepside with a V6 (I think it's a 4.3) and an o/d trans. I know he claimed great mileage,like 20 or so. I have a picture of the truck:

Re: Any of guys ever see a 4.3 V6 in our years trucks??

I had an S-10 Blazer with a 4.3 and I thought it ran pretty good.....I wouldn't have classified it as "gutless". I'm sure it's a little different story in a fullsize.... and in a 3/4 ton, worse yet. GMC used a turbo version of the 4.3 in the Typhoons and Syclones and they were Corvette eatin screamers.

Re: Any of guys ever see a 4.3 V6 in our years trucks??

I had one in a short wheel base 87 full size Chevy van. It was torquey enough it'd pull the front wheels, it'd run 70 on the interstate all day. Definately didn't compare with a 350 but got 19 mpg!

I've had two 4.3's in astro vans and when you stomped down on them you couldn't tell them from a 350. The 94 model got 25 mph! I'd love to have one in a swb.

Re: Any of guys ever see a 4.3 V6 in our years trucks??

There's a kid here who has a 4.3 in a 69, I believe. Don't know which gearbox he's running, but I think it's an automatic. Whether it's an OD...I don't know.

My '96 GMC is running one. It's a SWB stepside regular cab, so should be a fair approximation of a '67-72 SWB for weight, etc. It seems my '69 weighed about 3800# which is about what the '96 weighs. Of course, you'd want to run an OD gearbox, especially if you have something taller than a 3.08. My late model runs a 3.42 behind the 4L60E. You should be able to run a 700R4 without any issues. Fuel economy on my truck is in the 17-20MPG range.

Re: Any of guys ever see a 4.3 V6 in our years trucks??

I had one in a 97 Blazer and I have one now in an 08 Silverado. In the blazer I loved it but in the Silverado I can't hardly stand it. I would get 20+mpg out of the blazer but I'm lucky to get 18 out of the Silverado. All in all I would say its a great motor especially if you plan to just drive it and not for performance or pulling, at least in a stock form. Throw a turbo on it and then, as stated above, performance enters a whole new level.

I plan to build a 50 GMC on an S10 and I'm planning to run the S10's 4.3 but I do want a manual trans over the auto. But again, I know what the truck is for and it ain't pullin' or chasing lights!

Re: Any of guys ever see a 4.3 V6 in our years trucks??

I had a 96 extended cab 4x4 sonoma zr2 with 4.3 auto and it was quicker than my friends 94 silverado reg cab 4x4 with a 350. Had 240k miles when I sold it 3 years ago, and I still see it running around town. I think it ran pretty good. I did drive a 2000 silverado 2wd 4.3 stick at a dealer, I didn't bring it home.
sonoma got about the same mielage as I'm getting w my c10 with a v8.

Re: Any of guys ever see a 4.3 V6 in our years trucks??

I had a fullsize '94 chevy standard cab with the 4.3l vortec in it. That was a great little truck, and the motor was actually pretty decent as far as horsepower. Never had a problem with it.
