I'm afraid I already know the answer to my question but I wanted to check with the guru's here to see if they know any tricks. Can you remove the fenders without taking off the front bumper? I tried everything I could to get it off but no luck. I was hoping to not have to take the bumper off.

This all started with replacing the rockers, seems to have escalated quickly...

the front bumper is only 4 bolts and comes off real easy... you cant take the front end apart because the grille is attacted to the fenders.. and there is a lip on the grille that goes down into the bumper for my 72 that is idk about the other years

X2, bumper and grill have to be removed.

That's what I figured, I was hoping to avoid that, there is more of my front end in the bed now than on the front of the truck! And those bumper bolts are being pretty stubborn. Before I know it I'm only going to have a frame sitting in my garage...

well i was able to remove it with out taking the bumper off. but since it was going in the scrap pile, i didnt care if it came out with scratches and it came out with quite a few deep ones from the bumper.

buy yourself a breaker bar, comes in handy when removing 40 year old bolts. I have already snapped two bolts in half.

There's a write up in the FAQ for removing the front clip as a unit in one piece. The bumper will have to come off first.

along the same lines, Im also getting ready to replace both front fenders on my 68 GMC. Do i need to take the cowl of to do this?

few bolts are hidden by the cowl if you havent taken it apart yet..

That's kinda how it works. I've already told myself that if I ever buy another one I'm not going to start "fixing" it for at least a year or two.

The can of pb blaster on top of the air cleaner in the last pic says it all!! IMO, ya can't work on these trucks with out it! btw, the truck looks good. Pat

No, you dont HAVE to remove the bumper,or front grill to take off a fender, It makes life easier, but not necessary.

Just did this this weekend on the burb.......

Only removed the hood hinge, the cowl, and the inner fender.......

I figure I'll resurrect an old thread instead of starting a new one.

I'm taking my front clip apart to repair rust.

Do I need to take off all 6 bolts to remove the front bumper? or just the main 4 as Tim2391 suggests?

I'm having a heck of a time trying to remove the top 2 bolts on the front of the bumper, the rest are out.

I leave the top 2 on the bumper and remove the little bracket from the frame.
