Stock ignition coil location

OK so now I've gone with a pertronix conversion kit for the Mallory I'm stuck with an external coil (Pertronix flamethrower in black so it blends in with the firewall) You can see from the attached picture where the old coil was located and although I get to lose the external ballast resistor I want a more discrete location and it needs to be mounted vertically to avoid the coil overheating. Where was the stock coil located? If I can't fit it there anyone got any ideas of a good place to mount the damn thing so its a bit more out of sight? I'm happy to get longer leads if I need to.

The original location would have been in a mounting bracket that attaches to the intake manifold behind the carburetor. This would solve your "visibility" issue and get it mounted more vertically.....but I have never heard of this "vertical mounting" having anything to do with overheating the coil? As stated, the original location was on the manifold, which would get hotter than the firewall, so I'm not seeing the benefit of moving it? other than purely cosmetic, which is a perfectly good reason....

The instructions say to mount it vertically, something to do with the cooling oil inside leaving part of the coil uncooled if its mounted sideways, they do an epoxy filled one for odd mounting positions/boats/4x4's etc.

Anyone got a picture of an original coil bracket and one of it in position? There must be some stock points trucks still on here.

It would look like this one. It mounts to two raised bosses behind the carburetor, slightly to the driver's side.

Thanks, can they be bought from anywhere (bearing in mind I'm in the UK so can't nip out to NAPA, Autozone or a Chevy dealer)

Why not move the coil over to the other side beside the master cylinder. You could stand it up like you want. Wires should reach. It'll stay cooler too.

Yeah, thats what I thought although I need to make sure it'll still fit when I fit the power booster thats going on soon. I might need to modify the bracket I have as at the moment it has a mounting ear/hole either side and it is too big.

Should still fit cause your booster will have a bracket that spaces it out from the firewall.
