Shorter Aftermarket Column?

My '66 was an old column shift, as many were, and since has been converted to floor shift. The column needs to be replaced, as it is binding, and slowly coming apart, but I was looking to go shorter.

From what I understand, the OE column is about 32" long. I was curious if anyone has had a bench seat, with the cab gas tank, and put in a shorter "universal steering column." I feel as if the column has extra room to spare..

I am looking to get a little more elbow/lap room Any advice, or thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.
