Re: opinions on carb and intake manifold

carb: a 750 holley is NOT an improvement over a good old q-jet (also a 750). GM ran them on all their top muscle cars back in the day. you can't beat the balance of efficiency and power that comes from a spread bore design. only thing out there that is better is a nice fuel injection system.

intake: remember that big blocks are low rpm motors and like a daily driver, do not benefit from an intake tuned to start developing power at higher engine speeds.

cam: roller valvetrain is the smart way to go....less valvetrain wear and tear and less power bled off as friction. another piece you will want to benefit the idle - 5000 rpm range on a street truck.

Re: opinions on carb and intake manifold

you are going to get a bunch of different opinions on this subject its one of the most colorful subjects I've seen discussed here. In my experience I have had the best luck with holleys they are pretty simple to work on and tune as I am no carb tech. I love the sound of a quadrajet being opened up , but in my experience they are not novice friendly , I've had a couple rebuilt and never felt like I had them tuned right( never tried one of the factory rebuilt ones) , most the new carbs( holleys and edelbrocks) are pretty much bolt on and go. not a big fan of the edelbrocks but a lot of guys love them. I have a holley 750 on my 454 and it performs well, this is a tough decision to make good luck

Re: opinions on carb and intake manifold

I agree with the Q-jet being better, but if you do want to run a Holley, a 750 may not be the best size. Look into the 650 cfm range. The smaller cfm will give you better throttle response, better driveability, and actually, more horsepower.

After you pick your cam and intake, figure out what heads you have and the specifics on them. Then call somebody like The Carb Shop or QFT and they'll actually match a carb to what you have.

Re: opinions on carb and intake manifold

i like multicarb setups// i'd go twin carbs on a midrise manifold on a bigblock// alot depends on specs

without knowing specs a cam suggestion is useless// i spend lots of time with companies on thier tech line doing research to pick a cam to work properly in my applications

Re: opinions on carb and intake manifold

i agree with Cdowns on the cam. call tech lines. give them your specs and let them know what you are looking for out of your engine (performance-vs-rpm range). they can also assist you on the intake and carb size for what you are looking for.

carb brand is up to you.
me personally i perfer the edelbrock.
edelbrock - better for cruzen - a little harder to adjust but once it is set it is done.
Holly - better for racing - easyer to adjust out but one backfire and you are off to the store for anotherone.
qjet - if you have someone that is knows them well and is good with them you cant beet em however if you dont you will be fighting with them contently they are tempermentaly and dont like it at all when someone touches them that dont know what they are doing.

these are all just my opinions though.
