welded steering wheel

So i bought a 67-68 steering wheel from a member and I go to put it on and before I can do that I find out that the PO had welded the steering wheel to the threaded shaft that goes through the column. My question is could I just pull that shaft out and place another in its place or would the whole column have to be replaced? Oh and the column is not a tilt, I felt that one coming.
