71 gmc problems
alllllright, i have a 71 gmc longbed with a 350 factory disc brakes up front, 3 on the tree, all the bells and wistles, it has all the beautiful rust spots in the corner panels and all that lovely stuff, and i just got the motor running pretty reliably... knock on wood but thats a different story, i cant wait to get in the process of restoring it the rest of the way and hoppin the motor up, but for right now my problem is...
my linkage/clutch ordeal... im 20 and have been driving the truck on and off for bout 3 to 4 years, and my question to all of you is what is my best bet, i want to eliminate the linkage hang up. its gotten really bad lately what transmission options am i looking at, i dont want a 350 or 400 turbo tranny and id kinda like to make it 4 in the floor or something but spit some options at me please.

I am not sure what you mean. is the linkage hanging up and you want to fix it?
what do you do with the truck? work? play? the factory sm-456 4 speed is great for a work truck, not as good for a hotrod.

in time it will be hotrod, and im tryin to just replace it. i could fix it but in terms of future plans it would just be a waste of money. in my eyes.

so your not wanting to fix the clutch problem, and your not wanting a th350 or th400.
you probably want a 5-speed with overdrive

My '67 with 3 on the tree would give me linkage hang up from time to time. I found I could replace the bushings(where the linkages connected to the trans) and that would solve the problem until the bushings wore and got too much slop in them again. I also learned to shift slower - letting it drop into 2nd as opposed to rushing it and this helped to.

but back on topic ^ i agree on the bushings cause mine are pretty much shot. i "rushed" the gears some but also try letting it fall in aswell, i have more luck when i rush the gears actually, all in all i ordered the floor shift conversion kit, should be here monday or tues. and that will just buy me time on the swap. |

I think for future horsepower upgrades you should either look into the tko 500 5 speed or a t56 6 speed out of a 93-02 camaro. they will take some power. You could get a t5 out of an s10, but they start having problems when you get over 300 hp. lots of people on here have done all these swaps so there is lots of info on here if you search. I plan on doing the t56 swap one day. Good luck, and I hope this helps you out!

went with the mr gasket kit. only 70 bucks.. hopefully it holds up better then whats there

Hurst Indy is what came on my truck. If you've got a bench seat, you'll have to modify the shifter a little for clearance in 1st and 3rd, but nothing major.

I'm a bit late with this but,I use the factory 3 OTT shifter and it works fine.I just had to clean and lube it a couple of weeks ago.There is a great write up in the FAQ's section of the board that details how to get the original shifter to work well and reliably.
