38" tire balancing

has any one had luck spin balancing big tires? like 38" tsl's? I had my 38-13-16's powder balanced and it worked well, but went i took my truck off road last weekend I aired down the tires for rockcrawling and i think my powder blew out. i would like to be able to air the tires up &down without affecting the balance. any input is appreciated.

Re: 38" tire balancing

ive balanced a set of 37" baja claws for a 2003 dodge 2500 with a spin balancer. they were on 17" wheels, not sure of the brand. they took a BUNCH of weight but the guy said they rode great. the wheels he has had to have stick on weights inside and out though, so it was easy to bunch up the weight in a small area (it was for a coworker at the dealership i work at)

Re: 38" tire balancing

My experience with swampers is that you will rarely get a true, balanced tire. Even if it balances out at 0 more then likely the tire is out of round. Its just the trade off of having large bias ply tires. I spun balanced my 13/38/16 tsl's with stick on and hammer on weights and thats about the best their gonna get.

Re: 38" tire balancing

Theres stuff called equal that is a powder that you put in a big tires to balance it.I run it in all 10 of my semi tires and it worked great. As soon as i get my 72 4x4 running that i will be driving on the road with 36 inch swampers ill have it in them. Semi tires are hard to balance too and iv heard of all types of stuff that gets put into there tires. Rings that bolt on to the hub with weights that run in oil And the best one i ever heard was a company that run 3 golfballs in each tire and thay said it worked great.
And if your running equal theres valve cores you can run that have a little screen in them. But the bigest thing is to make sure the air you use to pump back up is dry thay make a filter for that too.

Re: 38" tire balancing

"Truing" will solve a lot of the problems involved with these big tires. This is nothing more than a large lathe that cuts the tread of the tire down to the point of being round. It doesn't fix the balance, but it goes a long way to reducing the weight needed. It sounds bad to cut tread off of your tires but it actually makes them last longer.
A perfectly balanced tire that is not round still transmits vibrations to the truck as the axle moves up/down because of an egg-shaped tire. This leads to more wear on the tire. Round tires last longer even though some of the wear area is cut off.

Large truck tire dealers should be able to do this for you.

Tire truing....I`ll have to look into that.Sure makes sense to me.Take a little off now, before the road takes the rest.I know I have never "rebalanced" a tire and you`re s`posed to.Truing would go a long way towards helping there.

Re: 38" tire balancing

I use to have 2 different trucks with 39" Swampers on them. I never had the tires balanced and they rode fine. I had one of the trucks up to about 80 mph on the highway...

Re: 38" tire balancing

my 37" MTRs have a ton of weight on them, no telling how they ride though, as they-along with my axles, are still in the garage while the truck is outside. haha they can be balanced though.

I don't care if you doubt it of not. I was there. I have alot of friends that run 36" and larger tires and never balance them...

Re: 38" tire balancing

I have been running Swampers for 15 years and have never had a smooth set. Even after balancing they still vibrate. Just added a bag of Equal to each tire and gonna see how that works. Not sure that it is that good for wheeling and moisture.

exactly

theres no way a set of swampers that big will ever ride smooth, especially on a truck that has heavy springs for off roading, my 71 rides rough with brand new 32" street tres that are balanced perfect

Re: 38" tire balancing

Believe me, "Truing" will do wonders for this. It even takes some of the drone sound away from your on-road driving. Balance can only do so much for a tire that is not round. I have seen many of these tires more than 3/4" out of round. Sometimes it is egg or oval shape other times it is just that the bead is not in the center of the tire. Truing is not the only answer, you need to balance after for best performance/tread life....but it does sooo much more than balancing ever can.

Re: 38" tire balancing

Mudder, Look for a big truck tire store. Some of the Goodyear stores around here can do it. It might take some phone calls or net searching........it will be worth it.
