Soundproofing...What are my options? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm trying to go down the cheap, but most effective way to soundproof the cabin of my '67 GMC Truck. It has so much noise coming from the engine bay and transmission that I can't even listen to the radio or carry on a conversation. Should I use any rubberized sound proofing spray, then use some sort of dynamat type material with jute padding or what? What are your opinions and the best possible result?

The more the merrier! All 3 things you mentioned will help quiet things down. The biggest thing you want to do is make sure you don't miss anything. If any area DOESN'T have sound deadener, even if it's a small area, that will contribute more toward the noise factor. So think "COMPLETE COVERAGE" as you do whatever you are going to do.

FYI, for Dynomat, count on about $200 - $300 to cover the cab and insides of the doors completely. Then add to that whatever else you are going to do. So it will cost you a little money, but as you know from not having it, it is WELL worth it! Especially if you sell it. The guy that bought mine couldn't believe how quiet it was inside. Good luck!

it is not so much having tons of insulation to sound proof, but just something to dampen the natural vibration of and the echo of air riding over large patches of sheet metal.

some cheap rubberized undercoating might work. you don't have to worry as much about moisture getting underneath and making it fall 'cause its on the inside. cheap do it yourself poly bed liner might make a more attractive choice since you don't have to worry about uv exposure. you can get a rhino lining kit at walmart. on the outside, you'd want a high quality product like al's liner or line-x.

can also use this on top of whatever u spray on. Its an adhesive backed duct insulation. I've read great reviews on this product. I purchaced some for my build.

If you have any car stereo installers in your area they should have Dynamat, but your looking at some money on that like the others said. The rubberized undercoat will be less effective as dynamat or other similar products, but is much cheaper and can be found at any auto parts store.

Also, that jute backing stuff helps and isn't too terribly expensive. Or just some really good, dense carpet padding... Depends on how much you want to spend. If you have NO insulation now, anything you do will be an improvement.
