Question Speedometer output question on a6.2L 6L80E ?

I did a swap in my 67 Suburban last summer with a 6.2/6L80E from a 2010escalade , everything worked out GREAT...
except I have no speedometer...
I`m going to use an electric speedo but I`m not sure where to grab the output from. From what i see the original output would been came from the BCM to the factory cluster.
Does anyone know if there is an ECM output/pin that an aftermarket speedo can read?

Re: Speedometer output question on a6.2L 6L80E ?

Alot of the newer gm cars and trucks use the BCM for ALOT of things, gauges, cruise control, A/C ext. With out it, it can be hard to hook up those things. I know of people who have been trying to bypass it for A/C and cruise in a GTO motor swap for a long while and to my knowledge no one has been able to pull it off as of yet.

That said, if you're going to be using aftermarket gauges, some you can tap directly off of the VSS, however 'sometimes' it will give an interference in the speed signal to the PCM.

X2, I originally tapped into the high side of the VSS for my speedo. Trans would act very funny when I hooked the speedo up. Hooked it to the PCM output and everything has been fine since.

Re: Speedometer output question on a6.2L 6L80E ?

6L80E/6L90E transmissions dont have a external VSS sensor, The ECM doesnt have a VSS output curcuit.

The VSS signal is sent on a "high speed serial data line" by the TCM to several modules.

Ive only done one LS/6 speed auto swap......Im not an expert......The car had a late 8.8" Ford diff with a ABS speed sensor on it, I used that sensor to run a aftermarket speedo, It worked...so I used it. Im curious if anybody has another way also?

Easiest way I can think of would be to get a Speedhut GPS speedo.

Is getting a BCM from a simular truck (2010 Escalade), an option to get a vss output. I might be able to get cruise control, tow/haul mode to work?

That's totally possible, just more wiring. That's what I would so if it were mine.

Cruise isn`t that important to me, be nice to say it has it. But i know the tow/haul mode would be really useful pulling my monte on the trailer.

Did you do your own wiring harness modification? If you did, then wiring the BCM isn't any harder, so if you can get a BCM, have room to mount it somwhere, and can wire it up, then that's what I would do if I were you. You would be able to get your gauges to work, if you have A/C, it could be controlled through it and like you mentioned, the tow/haul. The cruise could be done too, but I "believe" they use a 3 wire cruise switch, which you probably won't be able to use with your stock column. The GenIII's and most GM cars back to about 83 or so use a 4 wire switch that can be made to work on an original column, but your 6.2 is a GenIV, so not sure what to tell you about that. I actually have a '33 Ford with an LS1, and I wired up a BCM out of an '02 Silverado to get the automatic headlights, dome light delay, retained accessory power and a couple of other features and it works perfect.

On a side note, I spent a week in the Greenpoint part of Brooklyn last year and didn't see but one or two old cars the whole time I was there, where do you guys hide them at???

Re: Speedometer output question on a6.2L 6L80E ?

I reworked the harness that came with the engine i bought, it was like new condition,
(2010 engine). I mounted the ecm under the dash and cut most of the harness to fit. Wiring isn`t a problem and i have a friend thats good with the HP tuner.
I will hit the yards to try to get a 2010 bcm.
If you pass my shop we always have something kool parked outside, even kooler stuff inside. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for interest, especially knowing the stuff that you`ve built. It`s was mostly just a drivetrain swap/upgrade this time around, the truck has been together a really long time. Thanks again.

Re: Speedometer output question on a6.2L 6L80E ?

I am in the planning stage of my L76 swap for my 85 Scottsdale. I would love to use the BCM so I can have auto headlights, delayed dome, perimeter lights, tow/haul, Bose radio maybe even remote start from a factory key fob if possible.

Re: Speedometer output question on a6.2L 6L80E ?

No, decided to go with a GPS type set up. I picked up a BCM that came with the connectors because of the Tow/Haul option but I`m still not sure if i can get a speedo output from the BCM. The 2010 cluster uses the data line to get the signal for the speedometer.

If you don't want to use GPS gauges, Speedhut makes CAN BUS gauges now, check this out. http://www.speedhut.com/gauges/freedom-gauges/36:5

Good stuff LS1nova, thanks. I need to see if they offer a 4 1/2 speedo that works with the bus/can set up.
I`ve seen your build thread on LS1 tech, nice piece.

I think so. I actually saw this on LS1Tech, and thought of this thread right off. Someone on there said that DD is working on the same thing.

I installed a Dakota Digital VHX Series dash made for the truck and used their bus/cans interface. I absolutely love it! You can pull up all kinds of info on the dash just like a scanner. It shows 1/4 mile times that are dead-on (mph and e.t.) Sorry I didn`t install one sooner.
Happy holidays!
