Re: LS engine purchase

I used carpart.com , I then called some and asked for a low mileage take out. I found my 5.3 with harness and ECM for $800. it had 80,000 miles.

Re: LS engine purchase

hmmm i think that might have been a partial typo

car-part.com is the one I see used the most for checking scrap yards. Most of the other close spellings of that site are random new parts or just dead links. car-part is scrap yard specific for used parts.

Re: LS engine purchase

I did it the hard way! Shelled out 1700 bones, for a wrecked/running 4wd truck...after all the 'smoke" cleared, & had a running 5.3/harness/computer/all assesories for a 5 dollar bill. Also saved a few parts for my 02 Silverado. If you have the time/space to part one out, you can have your pcs for free....or make money on the deal(depending on what you keep) Longhorn

Re: LS engine purchase

I would also check craigslist on a frequent basis. It seems there are always a few SUV's/trucks being parted out, private party. Private party sales tend to offer better prices and are more negotiable!

I'm still shopping for an engine/trans combo too so I'm in for any other leads!

Re: LS engine purchase

Aye, a screamin' deal. You might find one of those out here in CA without a trans, and with the intake and harness melted to the top of the motor It'd be worth it to have one of you midwestern boys ship us one out here on the coast.

I think I'm going to attempt what Crazy Longhorn suggests, but it might be the same story. Buy wrecked from nowhere, Oklahoma or something and cart it out here.

Re: LS engine purchase

Brought this home yesterday. Bought it at an insurance auction 60,111 miles. Paid $3200 for it, but I got the whole truck. I searched for months for a better deal on just a trans/engine combo with no luck and no way to verify the mileage on the ones I did find. Hopefully by the time I am done I'll be able to re-coupe some of what I paid by selling parts off of it. Best part, it runs and drives!

Re: LS engine purchase

^heck man
full set of wheels and tires - $350
looks like a good bed, complete - $650
bumper - $200
grill - $50
headlight - $50
tail lights - $60
misc interior - $75-250 (depends on seats etc)
rear end- $250-500

Thats in the neighborhood of $1800 just on light estimates, not even counting little stuff and things like suspension that I can't see. I can see you getting into an ls swap (the basic stuff) for only a couple hundred if you can get buyers for the part-out stuff.

Nice.

Re: LS engine purchase

I thought I'd post this information also. Copart, the insurance auction I bought the truck from is nation wide, and anyone can buy salvage vehicles from them with out a license. You register online, the auction is online, and its free unless you buy something. They have all the vehicle information online also, mileage, damage, runs and drives, etc. Be aware of the fees before you buy!!! There are buyers fees, taxes, and a couple misc. fees when you buy. I won the bid on this truck at $2400, after fees and taxes it was $3168.29 out the door. Factor that in when you bid. Check them out at copart.com.

Re: LS engine purchase

I bought mine off of Craigslist. Paid 1000 for 4.8l with harness computer, trans, lines, battery cables, maf, all plumbing. I thought it was a good deal. Others were calling on it as I was loading it up.

Re: LS engine purchase

All I can say is that it really pays to get it all in one lump. By the time you are done buying brackets, bolts, accessories, wires & a computer you are *really* burning time, energy & money - and that $500 motor wasn't so cheap after all.
I'd even look for a turnkey package, around $3,000, if you don't have a ton of time for the garage. And don't bother with the CPP cross members - they are junk.
