Another junk yard rant

Howdy fellas,

Sit right back and you'll hear a tale, the tale of a fateful trip....

Woke up this morning and it was rather cool out (less than 80* is cool here) so decided to head off to Pick-N-Pull to search for a driveshaft for the 68. I put the 700r4 in it and was wanting to go with one piece driveshaft in the process.

So I drive the 20 miles into the edge of San Antonio where the yard is located, pay my dollar admission and head off to the truck section, happens to be the far, back corner of the yard.

Lots of LWB GM trucks. So I start checking, the only way TO check, get on the ground and look! The vans and burbs all have 2 piece shafts. Many of the later model LWB trucks have one piece aluminum shafts.

I check truck after truck, found lots of one piece aluminum shafts. Here comes the BUT, they all have one thing in common. . . THEY'RE F'N BENT ALL TO HELL!

Just so happens that 3500lb vehicle + forklift = bent driveshaft. They use a forklift to carry the trucks out into the yard.

I don't mean just a few were bent. I mean of the 30 or so LWB GM trucks on the yard every single one was bent! Just unbelievable!

Two hours later I left with nothing. There are other junk yards I may check out later on but I was so disheartened I just came home, ate and took a nap. Bleh.

Rant off: Thanks for listening.

I know the feeling. I found a pristine burb 3rd door a while back except for the hole in it from the fork lift

Re: Another junk yard rant

Sorry ya struck out.

In the Pick-n-pull workers defense... The P-N-P yards are volume yards. Company policy is remove all the fluids (for gas tanks that means punch a hole in it) and put it in the yard. They remove no parts for sale individually. All sold parts are removed by the buyer only.

Kind of a rotten policy if ur after drive shafts and sometimes doors but P-N-P yards are damned fine yards. All graveled out. Every car up on solid stands. Handwashing stations (at least in Ca.) and cheap prices. Not to mention their bi-annual half-off sales.

My only complaint about P-N-P are the hack customers. You know, the ones that rip open a dash for 1 gauge instead of removing the cluster.

I'll never forget a buddy & I were at a yard, been there about an hour taking stuff off a couple cars. He had found a pristine console for his 79 firebird, we had several other parts along w/our toolbox off to the side of the office. the owner/manager was jabbering aout this & that walking over to our pile, when a forklift driver came along, swerved out of his way to run over all our stuff barely missing our toolbox. we grabbed our box & left. brian

Half the yards won't even let you pull anything anymore due to insurance issues. The last place I went to used a hammer and chisel to remove the fuel filler door I wanted off a 96 silverado. I'm glad they gave me a lot of extra metal cause it was all twisted where they cut it out.

Re: Another junk yard rant

When I went to the local yard with the crazy mood swinging old guy and bought my Dana 60 front axle, I got to see firsthand what they will do to some of the stuff just to make a buck.

The axle I wanted was in the bed of a Ford F250 that was packed tightly in a row with a Ford F350 flatbed and a chevy conversion van. the jy man has a little crane buggy that he told me was made out of a 1974 Chevy K20. he ran into the van so hard it rolled on its side, and he smashed most of the windows and totally punched a few holes in the side. there were a few transfer cases on top of the axle, and he picked them up with the crane and dropped a NP203 on top of the F350 cab and smashed the roof in and broke the windshield (it had looked pretty good to me).
I couldn't believe he did all that just to get my axle. But hey, I got a deal and he got his money.

Re: Another junk yard rant

At least you got your toolbox!!!!
I went to a jy last fall just off a gravel road. had 2 handfuls of parts so sat first load down on shoulder by ditch and went for second batch. while I was walking back with second batch a little red car pulled up and grabbed my toolbox and drove off!!!!!!!!!!! jumped in my truck and I finally caught up with them 4 miles down the road. Boy was I mad.I told them I think you picked up something that isn't yours. They just said they thought it was junk even though all my parts were stacked there with it.
