Blinkers make Radio cut out ???

71 with aftermarket radio.
When I use my turn signals the stereo cuts in and out with the blinker.
So as my blinker flashes the radio stops working and lights up to the flash of the blinker.
What the heck a going on?
Thanks

Yep. It's almost always a bad ground.

Re: Blinkers make Radio cut out ???

It sounds like the current power source grounds out via the turn signal circuits.
The radio fuse almost always routes thru the turn signal switch...why...never really dug deep enough to find out why...

I would just rewire the power source for the radio to an Ignition On hot circuit..make sure it is fused with a 10-15 amp fuse.

Make sure the chassis of the radio is grounded direct to a metal surface of the truck....

As was stated earlier, check all grounds. If you are not sure, just run new ground wires to everything.

Re: Blinkers make Radio cut out ???

Remove the power wire for the radio from where ever you have it running to now.

Add an inline 5 Amp fuse to the radio power wire and run it direct to the battery positive terminal....this will power the radio feed continuously, but will isolate the radio play function from the rest of the electrical system.

Retest the radio function...try turning on the blinkers etc...does the radio still cut out ?

Make sure there are ground straps between the cab and chassis, radiator support and chassis, and engine and chassis...

Let us know what the results are...dont worry about other issues until you do the above and retest.

Just treat it like little pipes that the electrons run around in. Most of the problems come where the wires come into contact with another wire or connector. Look carefully with a bright light at all the connectors and how the grounds connect. I'm betting that there are corroded connections, given you are in Michigan.

Re: Blinkers make Radio cut out ???

Ground problems can be a pain in the rear. One thing I've done to help troubleshoot pesky turn signal problems is to build several long 16-18 gauge wires with alligator clips at both ends so I can create a solid temporary ground from things like turn signal housings direct to a sanded bare metal frame connection - just so I can troubleshoot. I move from turn signal housing to turn signal housing, one at a time, trying the turn signals and hazards, etc - and if the problem resolves, the place you're temporarily grounding at that moment helps isolate the bad ground - then you need to examine the culprit taillight housing and why it isn't grounding without using the jumper wire. Crusty screws, bad frame grounds - of course make sure your actual battery ground is connected to a clean, bare metal ground spot.

Re: Blinkers make Radio cut out ???

Well I think I should start by replacing this plug that is melted some how . It is the plug that goes into the ignition key .

What are your thoughts on this ?
