1300 mile trip on the horizon

I have my 69 in Kentucky with me but my 71 has been in Wyoming with my brother-in-law. Now that my 16 year old son is taking over the 69, I'm ready to bring the 71 out.

The 69 was bought new by my grandfather and I got it when I was 13 for working for him on his farm for a summer. It would only go in reverse when I got it. I fixed it and drove it through high school, college, and until I had kids when the transmission went out again. We left it at my parent's farm/ranch when we moved to Kentucky. My son and I put in a new transmission and drove it out to Kentucky a few summers ago. He is now driving it and I need my own.

The 71 was bought new by the University of Wyoming and used in their physical plant until 2001 when I bought it at their surplus auction. It is a short bed and when I was a student at UW, I'd see it around and wish that it was mine. It has a 307 and automatic. It has some floor rust and at some point got hit in the back rear corner. It was fixed but some of the bonds is starting to crack. Other than that it's in pretty good shape.

I doubt it has ever been driven on the interstate more than 10 times in the past 45 years. At some point, the university put an HEI distributor and recovered the bench seat in it but other than that it is bone stock.

I'm flying out to Wyoming this weekend to see my mom and am going to evaluate the truck as to whether it is up to a 1300 mile drive. I'll change the fluids and the hoses, tune it up, and check the brakes, tires, and suspension. It it looks good I'll start driving back on Monday night after a meeting in Denver. What's the worst that can happen?! I have family and friends along the way and I could always put a call for help on here!

Anyway, I'll keep you updated on the progress!

Re: 1300 mile trip on the horizon

That's a cool little truck, I drove it several times when I worked at UW in the late 90s. It had the rear bed damage back then.
I always wondered when they auctioned it off. I had moved away in 2001 so I obviously missed it. I would have bought it.
It still had the disc brake sticker on the tailgate back then.
They also had a C50 with a tach/air cluster that I drove a lot, and several short step 69/70s with utility boxes and 3 on the tree.

Wow small world.

Give it a once over and drive it! That'll be a fun trip.

Thanks! I'll probably take I-80 across Nebraska and then dip down to Kansas City to I-70/64 to Lexington. I'm starting to get excited about it!

That's so cool! I was a student or staff member at UW between 1987 -1995 and 1998 - 2007.

I'll look for the disc brake sticker. At some point the rear bed was fixed but it needs to be addressed again.

Definitely a small world!

You and your son should do it together as it would a super experience and lifetime memory for both of you. When you think of it the trucks are pretty simple mechanically so there is not really a lot that can go wrong them.

Re: 1300 mile trip on the horizon

Picked up the truck and it seems to be running great. I've drive about 300 miles just here and there with no issues. I'll leave from my meeting in Denver tonight around 5 pm. Just over 1000 miles to go! I'll be taking I-70 across Kansas and hook up with 64. It's a straight shot from here!

Re: 1300 mile trip on the horizon

Well, 1449 miles and 137 gallons of gas and 3 GALLONS of oil (literally) later, I made it home! Despite the crazy oil use, the truck ran great and was able to cruise easily at interstate speeds.

The strange thing about the oil use is that it is NOT smoking and there are no drips on the ground. The engine is dirty but I would think that if it were leaking I'd see puddles on the ground?

My only scare was at one point the speedometer cable started making a racket. I thought it was the engine and pulled over. The noise went away and didn't return!

I had two offers to buy the truck but that comes with the territory!

Congrats on the drive!

Is there a PCV system on the motor? It could be plugged... or you have one hell of a leak somewhere.

Exactly what I was thinking, a PCV system that isn't hooked up/functioning properly. Congrats on making it through, cool little trip to do!!

Thanks! I checked the PCV valve and it rattled so I assumed it was ok. Is that a bad assumption?

Re: 1300 mile trip on the horizon

It should rattle. Maybe something else?

I bet that's the first time that truck has been out of Wyoming. I doubt UW ever took it that far.

I think you're right. I doubt it was even on the interstate that many times!

Re: 1300 mile trip on the horizon

Look under it for wet areas. I had a harmonic balance seal go bad once and it spewed a quart of oil about every few hundred miles.

And just because you can't necessarily see smoke coming out of the tailpipe, doesn't mean that it isn't still burning it.
